Every morning after Mary and Laura had done the dishes made their bed and swept the floor; they could go out to play
On the banks of Plum Creek rushes were growing and the girls could see blue flags with their ruffled petals.

Laura and Mary pulled the jointed rushes to hear them squeak
They put the little ones together to make necklaces.

Pa promised the girls to take them upstream beyond the willow valley because they were never allowed to go there alone, not even to see it.
The creek came around a curve there.

It came out of a hole of deep, dark water.

On one Sunday after noon Pa told them he would take them beyond the valley, so they put on old patched dressed
On their way they passed a tableland.
a and Ma told Laura not go far, but Laura didn't listen, so she deserved a ducking
Her father grabbed her from her feet and ducked her under the water.Laura was awfully scared.
The family had so much fun that day.

After they went home, Pa told the girls that they were not allowed to go there alone, not even to see it.

The next day Mary was busy with Ma, and Laura was playing alone
one. Laura felt bored and she thought about going to the deep water again, but this time alone.
Everything seemed not interesting as it was with Pa.
She slid down the table and towards the deep water just to wade her feet.
On her way, there stood a strange animal.

Long gray fur bristled all over it

A frightful snarl came out of it so she ran back home.
Laura felt bad about breaking her promise to Pa. She told Pa what she did.
She also told him about the strange animal, which Pa said, was a badger
Pa told her that she would have to stay the next day where Ma could see her, and if she behaved well, they would trust her again.
