The objectives of this study were to investigate the importance of sustainable design and green building and the effects of not consider the significance of sustainable and green building strategy in the development. A quantitative methodological approach was used in this research.
Twenty respondents participated to answer a set of questionnaire in this study. The finding shows how important sustainable and green building strategy in the development. Meanwhile, industrial development that does not apply sustainable design and green building will lead to damages to the environment. It can be concluded that every development need a proper strategy in which later can benefits the living occupants, he environment in the long term.
This study may have implications for key players in development by knowing the importance of sustainable design and green building and being able to provide a sustainable development and protect the environment. Few limitations were faced while conducting this study in which time constrain made the obvious obstacle and insufficient knowledge of the some students in respond to the questionnaire.Future research is recommended to be carried out to further understanding the importance of sustainable and green building and search for respondents who have experience working in the construction industry. Keywords: sustainable design, sustainable, green building, development, environment The Importance of Sustainable Design and Green Buildings in the Development.
"To be sustainable is to be aware of the long-term, effects of what you do on your environment and the future. To sustain is not to over-reach but to endure", (Havana, Daniel and Guillemot,2011).Sustainable as defined in Borderland's report (Our Common Future, 1987): "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". In this interpretation of the definition, sustainability is about so much more than Just Ewing green. According to the U. S.
Green Building Council, generally, green homes are healthier, more comfortable, more durable, and more energy efficient and have a much smaller environmental footprint than conventional homes.Sustainable design and green building merges sound, environmentally responsible practices into one discipline the looks at the environmental, economic, and social effects of a building and the surrounding sites as a whole (U. S Environmental Protection Agency, Pollution Prevention and Innovation: Sustainable Design and Green Building) Today, environmental problems are increasing due to the rapid development demands by he growth of the population in the cities.Globalization is the reason that leads to the rapid urban growth has major increased the fossil-fuels consumption which results in climate change (The International Journal of Climate Change: Impacts and Responses, Volume 3, Issue 2, up.
197-218). In the United States, building account for 39% of total energy use, 12% of the total water consumption, 68% of total electricity consumption and 38% of the carbon dioxide emissions (U.S Environmental Protection Agency, Pollution Prevention and Innovation: Sustainable Design and Green Building). Industrial development contributes the most in creating damages to the environment.
As noted by M. K. Dixie et al in his article, the building industry is one of the human activities with the largest environmental impact (Energy and Buildings, 2010). Furthermore, the cost of expenditure also shoots up because of this evolution, for instance, the cost of a house and their maintenance. The cost of living has rapidly increased for the last twenty years according to the speed of the development in the city parallel to the demand of the populations (Otto Bauer, The High Cost of Living, 914).
However, all these problems can be reduced when people start to think of the impact of sustainability as the medium of true development and apply it in the first stage of design process. According to Richard Taylor, the reason most houses get ridiculously expensive is that they are pretty poorly planned (7 Ways to Beat the High Cost of Home Building, 2012).Sustainable Design and Green Building promotes environmental equality, economic vitality, and social benefit by integrating site selection, design, and construction and operation of the built environment with green reactive (U. S Environmental Protection Agency, Pollution Prevention and Innovation: Sustainable Design and Green Building).
It is critical to make the decision to build a green building early in the design process in order to maximize the green potential, minimize re-design, and assure the overall success and economic viability of the green elements of the building project.Making a commitment to build green and establishing firm environmental objectives for the project must be done as early as possible because opportunities for incorporating green technologies and design lotions become less and less available and increasingly costly to implement as the project design and construction process progresses (Governor's Green Government Council). Therefore, this research aims to investigate the viewpoints of the Auxiliary of Architecture and Environmental Design (EKED) students on the importance of sustainable and green building design and the effects of not considering it in the development. This research will also be conducted properly in order to fulfill all the research questions. The objectives of the study are: 1. To study the importance of Sustainable Design and Green Building.
2. To investigate the effects of not consider the significance of sustainability and green building strategy in the development. Research questions: 1. What are the importance of Sustainable Design and Green Building? 2.
What are the effects of not consider the significance of sustainable design and green building strategy in the development?Methodology Participants This study is designed for Ill-JAM students and specifically for architecture students from the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design (EKED). Total of 20 students were selected to participate in the survey representing the whole population of architect students. 1 of them were male and 9 of them were female where 7 of them are from 4th year and 13 from 3rd year students. The participants are major from the age of group around 21-26 years old.Materials This research paper is conducted in quantitative methodological approach in which the respondents are provided with a set of questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 3 sections where the first part presented the respondents' profile information and the students' exposure to sustainable design and green Building design.
The second part will examine the importance of sustainable design and building design from the IEEE of architecture students. The final part will investigate the effects from the failure to look after the sustainability strategy.Procedure Respondents were approached during the break time at their respective studios. Copies of questionnaire were distributed to 20 randomly selected students representing the whole population of architecture students.
The participants had been given 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire before it is been collected back. The data was afterward analyzed using frequency counts to evaluate the responses of the subjects. The data were represented in the form of column charts. FindingsThe introduction of sustainability-related requirements into new product development has been a popular topic since the asses and architecture students have been exposed to the study of sustainable design and green building. Therefore, this research is to investigate the importance of sustainable design and green building in the development and to know the effects to the environment when it is neglected.
The survey has been conducted on 20 respondents from EKED (1 1 males and 9 females) who randomly selected to answer the questionnaire.Majority all of them are well known with the term sustainable design and green building and 100% of them ere actually applied it in their design. Therefore, it can be concluded that all respondents are very well understand with the concept of sustainability and green building. This indicates that the sustainable design and green building strategies are very important to be applied in the design. The first research question of this study was: What are the importance of sustainable design and green building in the development? Figure 1. Indicates the percentage of the respondents who recognized the importance of sustainable design and green building.
Based on Figure 1 . 1, 90% of the respondents strongly agreed and 10% had greed that sustainable design and green building are environmentally friendly. This percentage is such due to the fact that sustainable development has the ability to reduce global warming and climate changes and 65% of the respondents strongly agreed and 35% had agreed to this claim. Another benefit from implementing sustainable development is that it can optimize operational and maintenance practices.
Since it does much affect the services of the subjects, total of 55% respondents strongly agreed, 40% agreed with the statement whereas 5% disagreed. This shows the majority of Ill-JAM architecture students had agreed to the fact that sustainable design and green building is important in every development since it has a lot of advantages towards the environment whereas only a small percentage disagreed. Figure 1. 2 illustrates 5 questions regarding the effects for not considering the significance of sustainable design and green building.
The first question simply points out the fact that rapid development gives harm to the environment in which 80% of the respondents strongly agreed and 20% agreed to this idea. The second question in this section claimed that unsustainable development increase natural sources impacts and total of 37% of the respondents strongly agreed and 58% agreed to this statement leaving only 5% of the respondents who disagreed about this. Question three in this section stated the idea of how modern architecture actually minimizes renewable energy consumption. 2% of the respondents strongly agreed and 63% were agreed to the statement whereas 5% disagreed to this idea. Meanwhile, question four specified the belief of how unsustainable development can cause high cost in electricity and maintenance in which 45% had strongly agreed and 45% agreed while 10% of the respondents disagreed with the claim. Final question in this section on the other hand spoke about the carbon dioxide emissions due to the development where there is no sustainability consideration.
Majority of the respondents gave their consent in which 60% of them strongly agreed and 40% agreed. It is to be seen that environment need something that is called sustainability in order to keep it safe and sound. Discussion In brief, this study was conducted to examine the viewpoints of architecture students from International Islamic University (Ill-JAM) regarding the sustainable design and green building in the development. The objectives of this study are to find out the importance of sustainable design and green building as well as the effects towards environment. This study used a quantitative methodology approach with the mean of questionnaire. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 20 randomly selected students.
The data was afterward analyzed using frequency counts to evaluate the responses of the subjects. Based on the findings, it can be seen that majority of architecture students are very well exposed with the study of sustainable design and green building. Moreover, most of them were actually applying the concept of sustainable and green building in their design. Based on research question 1 it can be deduced that sustainable design and green building are important in every development. The result shows that the students are agreed with the fact that such strategies are important because it is environmentally friendly.
It can reduce global warming, gives a comfort living as well as optimizing operational and maintenance practices. This matter goes in line with the finding reported by Anthony Mohamed et al. (2008) in which green buildings are environmentally friendly and sustainable structure that incorporate various techniques to minimize their effects on the environment. This finding also similar to he finding conducted by Turner and Franken (2007) in which they found that new construction buildings showed that green buildings also performed 24% better than the national average for commercial buildings and had cost energy savings of 28%.
Finding of the research by David A. Gottfried (1996) also comparable to this research in which green building practices energy efficiency, reducing building impacts on human health and the environment, through better sitting, design, construction operation, maintenance and removal the complete building life cycle. Developments without considering the strategies of sustainable and green alluding give a negative impact to the environment. As the result shows from the research question 2, it can be presumed that industrial development gives harm to the environment in a way they turn down the use of natural resources and renewable energy.
Thus, they increase the carbon dioxide emission and electricity consumption as well as the cost of maintenance. This finding is equivalent with the research done by Dalmatian K. D. And Jobbers P.
N. (1996) whereby each industry that is developed add a certain amount of pollution to the environment and carbon dioxide contribute the most. Finding from the research by Et M. C. Et al.
(2006) also similar to this finding in which they established that maintenance costs have risen sharply relative to other operating costs due to rapid development with zero sustainable and green building strategy. It can be concluded that every development need a proper strategy in which later can benefits the living occupants, the environment in the long term. Sustainable design and green building are the best option provided since the early asses in order to have sustainable development that can protect the surrounding environment. This study has several implications. Key players in voltmeter may refer to this study by knowing the importance of sustainable design and green building from the viewpoint of EKED students.
Students may refer to this research to improve their knowledge on sustainable design and green building.By knowing the importance at early stage, they would be able to avoid the unsustainable development that can cause harmful to the environment. Consequently, many students are urged to take the advantages of the sustainable design and green building and apply it in their design. In future, there will be more green building produced by the architects. Along the way of completing this search paper, several limitations were faced in which time constraint made the obvious obstacle.
Researcher is given only few months to conduct this research and the data collection were made in a short period of time.
