Flat plains and grasslands, dry. The northern part is the high plains and the Palo Duro Canyon is a key feature. The Edwards Plateau lies to the south and the southern border is the Balcones Escarpment. Cities are Amarillo, Lubbock, Odessa, Midland.

Cabeza de Vaca
1528-1536-First European to live among several Native American tribes in Texas. He also, traveled through parts of Texas and was able to identify key geographical features of Texas. His book about Cibola caused the Spanish to send Coronado on his expedition in 1540.
Coronado
1540-Explored the southwest part of the U.S. He was looking for Cibola, never found it. Did see the Grand Canyon. Spanish stopped sending explorers after he was unable to find gold in their northern territory
La Salle
Claimed the Mississippi Valley for France, as French moved into East Texas it reignited Spain's interest in East Texas, his ship, the La Belle was sunk off coast.
