Summary, “Neat People vs. Sloppy People”Suzanne Britt gives her view of the distinct differences between sloppy and neat people. Sloppy people live in a complex dream world, and some day will get around to doing all the things they intend to do according to their extravagant plan. They have no intention of ever being neat, nor will they ever follow through with any attempt of cleaning, sorting, or organizing, but will maintain the best of intentions.
She provides a contrasting description of neat people by her observation in the manner of how neat people interact with their surroundings. They throw things away immediately, remove clutter, and prevent any object from collecting dust. Britt has many examples to compare the differences between sloppy and neat people. Lazy, mean, wasteful, and insensitive are categories to explain her contrast differences.
“A precise plan, that is so stupendous, so perfect, it can’t be accomplished in this world or the next” (Britt, 255). ” Neat people are bums and clods at heart” (Britt, 256). With these two examples side by side, both neat and sloppy people are lazy, but have very distinct differences.“Someday sloppy people will make family scrapbooks into which they will put newspaper clippings, post cards, locks of hair, and the dried corsage from their senior prom” (Britt, 255). “Neat people will toy with the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter” (Britt, 256).
Again, comparing another pair of examples shows the clear differences in how sloppy people are incapable of being mean. The direct opposite can be concluded from the neat people’s perspective of a neat and tidy household. The subtle differences in wasteful behavior of sloppy and neat people is described again in the form of opposition with the discrimination of material objects, i. e.
books, magazines, newspaper, and postcards. The only point of view sloppy and neat people have in common, is the contents inside the trash can (Britt, 257). Sloppy people are incapable of being insensitive, “They give loving attention to every detail” (Britt, 256). In contrast, neat people just prefer results (Britt, 256).
