-in 1620 Pilgrims found a second English Colony in Massachusetts -in 1630 puritans also wanted a religious freedom and establish a larger colony at Massachusetts Bay -Wanted to build a model community; woman and growing families helped success

-Henry Hudson, sailing for the Dutch found 3 waterways in the North east part of America -Hudson river, Hudson Bay and Hudson strait -Claimed region, established fur trade -trade with iroquis tribe -formed dutch west india company -1621 government gave permission to colonize, known as New Netherland

-English didn't like the Dutch being in New Netherland -King Charles II gave his brothers (Duke of York) permission to drive them out. -Dutch gave up without a fight, and it was renamed New York -1750 1.2 million English were on East Coast (Maine to Georgia)
