On pages 23-24, Little Man and Cassie both saw a racist chart stamped on the inside cover of the books that claimed whit students got new to poor conditioned books and a black student got a very poor one. Also, the chart called blacks 'nigra' which is highly disrespectful

On page 30, Mama doubts that no one'll ever find out about what she did because no one (the whites/county) would care enough to go and check on a black school. "Mama laughed and picked up the other book. 'In the first place no one cares enough to come down here, and in the second place if anyone should come, maybe he should see all the things we need - current books for all of our subjects, not just somebody's old throwaways, desks, paper, blackboards, erasers, maps, chalk...' Her voice trailed off as she glued the second book" (30).

On pages 43 and 44, it said the county didn't provide buses for black students. The county provided very little for them.

Because he's so angry at them for forcing him and the other blacks into the slime of the gullies and laughing at them while shouting racist things at them

The bus broke, the white children had to walk home and will have to walk to school the next morning, too. Most of them tried to jump the lake and gullies, but fell in and got sopping wet
