Matter
Anything that had mass and takes up space
Chemistry
The study of matter and how it changes
Substance
A single kind of matter that is pure
Pure
Always having a specific composition
Physical Property
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Chemical Property
A characteristic of a substance that describes it's ability to change into different substances
Element
A substance that can't be broken down into any other substance
Atom
The basic particle from which all elements are made
Chemical Bond
A force of attraction between two atoms
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a set ratio
Chemical Formula
Symbols that show the elements in a compound and the set ratio of atoms
Mixture
Two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atoms are not chemically bonded
Distillation
A way of separating mixtures(liquids) by heating one liquid to a boiling point, turning it into a gas, then cooling the gas back into a separate liquid
Evaporation
A way of separating mixtures by leaving the mixture in open air, turning the liquids into gasses, then leaving behind solid components
Filtration
A way of separating mixtures by pouring the mixture through a filter
Magnetic attraction
A way of separating a mixture by pulling out a component(magnetic) in a mixture using magnets
Weight
A measure if the force of gravity on something
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
International System of Units
A system of measurement based on units of 10
Volume
The amount of space that matter occupies
Density
A measure of the mass of a material in a given volume
Physical Change
A change which alters the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any of the substances in the matter into a different substance
Chemical Change
A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Law of Conservation of Mass
The principle that the total amount of matter is neither created nor destroyed during chemical or physical changes
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold something is
Thermal energy
The total energy of the motion of all of the particles in an object
Endothermic change
A change in which energy is absorbed
Exothermic Change
A change which releases energy
Chemical Energy
The energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms
