Social concerns in the US wrap around the growing disparity between the very wealthy and an disappearing middle class. Economic concerns have grown since early 2000 and will have to be addressed soon or social unrest will likely increase.

It is the United States' fastest-growing trading partner, as well as its biggest supplier of illegal drugs. Latin America is also the largest source of U.S. immigrants, both documented and not. All of this reinforces deep U.S. ties with the region—strategic, economic, and cultural—but also deep concerns.

As a society, it's made them paranoid, hostile, caused them to sacrifice freedoms and liberties and commit unsavory and uncharacteristic acts of violence. Domestic terrorism gives rise to changes in security measures, some of which are very expensive and have caused the economy to falter.

We have always been wary of anyone developing nuclear weapons due to the fact that they could be used on us. The situation wasn't any different in this case. People were developing nuclear weapons and we were worried that there could be a chance that those weapons were being developed to be used on us.
