GAFE
Google Apps For Education is a free suite of hosted email and collaboration applications exclusively for schools and universities.Haiku has a Google docs button in our LMS.
IEP
Individualized Educational program defines the individualized objectives of a child who has been found with a disability. The IEP must be tailored to the individual student's needs as identified by the IEP evaluation process, and must especially help teachers and related service providers (such as paraprofessional educators) understand the student's disability and how the disability affects the learning process.
Common Core
..

.The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a U.S. education initiative that seeks to bring diverse state curricula into alignment with each other by following the principles of standards-based education reform. The initiative is sponsored by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

Curriculum Mapping
...Curriculum maps cover a wide range of important curricular activities. Typically, they attempt to:address the total education of the students in a buildingcreate a "word snapshot" of the educational activities of every classroom within a building or districtcapture the content, skills, and assessments taught or administered by every teacher within a school building or districtorganize this information into an easily accessed visual that presents a timeline of instruction by teacher and course.

Custom Domain
...We can give you a custom domain name. It generally includes the name of the school.

We charge a one-time fee of $2,500. Domains come with security certificates that need to be updated every two years or so, but Haiku only charges one time.

PLC
..

.A professional learning community is an extended learning opportunity to foster collaborative learning among colleagues within a particular work environment or field. It is often used in schools as a way to organize teachers into working groups.

SIS integration
...

Sharing information between a student information system to a learning management system.

Single instance
...

is a system's ability to keep one copy of content that multiple users or computers share. It is a means to eliminate data duplication and to increase efficiency. SIS is frequently implemented in file systems, e-mail server software, data backup and other storage-related solutions.

Single Sign-On
.

..(SSO)is a session/user authentication process that permits a user to enter one name and password in order to access multiple applications. The process authenticates the user for all the applications they have been given rights to and eliminates further prompts when they switch applications during a particular session.Haiku supports google sign on; LDAP/AD (Microsoft's version) and other federated log ins.

Standards-based grading

Standards-referenced grading
.

..System based on traditional grade levels: Students advance through the system at the same pace as other students of the same age. Students will advance with varying levels of knowledge and skills.Standards are used to guide curriculum and measure student progress.

Some promotion decisions may be made based on standardsTime is the constant; learning is variable.

VLE
...A virtual learning environment (VLE), or learning platform, is an e-learning education system based on the web that models conventional in-person education by providing equivalent virtual access to classes, class content, tests, homework, grades, assessments, and other external resources such as academic or museum website links. It is also a social space where students and teacher can interact through threaded discussions or chat.

LMS
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of e-learning education courses or training programs.
CMS
A content management system is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA). The CMA element allows the content manager or author, who may not know Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise of a Webmaster. The CDA element uses and compiles that information to update the Web site.

The features of a CMS system vary, but most include Web-based publishing, format management, revision control, and indexing, search, and retrieval.Essentially, Haiku LMS is a web page template that teachers put their content onto. This is one of the ways it is unique. Other systems like Edmodo and Schoology are more like Facebook with information streams.

LTI
Learning Tools Interoperability is a standard developed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium that allows for the easy and seamless connection of web-based learning content and tools. Through our new LTI Tools integration, you can embed your favorite learning applications, content and activities into Haiku from their externally-hosted platform. Add new LTI Tools to your domain through the Applications area of the domain control.
SCORM
Sharable Content Object Reference Model is a set of technical standards for e-learning software products. SCORM tells programmers how to write their code so that it can "play well" with other e-learning software.

It is the de facto industry standard for e-learning interoperability. Specifically, SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate with each other. SCORM does not speak to instructional design or any other pedagogical concern, it is purely a technical standard.SCORM gives teachers a way to provide their students with rich, dynamic content, and returns progress and score information. The possibilities are limitless, and because SCORM supports advanced tools like sequencing, teachers can create content that changes based on students actions.

Essay questions do not work with SCORM, even though they may be available with some authoring tools such as SoftChalk. Essay questions can still be included, but you would need to ask students to print the question (there is a print button beneath essay questions with SCORM) in order to evaluate their responses.

FERPA
the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act is federal legislation written to provide data privacy protections for students. Haiku commonly receives inquiries about FERPA from school administrators or IT staff concerned about compliance, or with our RFP (Request for Proposal) submissions for large district contracts. We comply with FERPA standards, our information is secure.

RFP
A request for proposal is a solicitation made, often through a bidding process, by a school interested in the Haiku LMS. It is submitted early in the procurement cycle, either at the preliminary study, or procurement stage. The RFP process brings structure to the procurement decision and is meant to allow the risks and benefits to be identified clearly up front.
HTML 5
HTML5 is a markup language used for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web and a core technology of the Internet.

This is what some text book users are using for their text books. HTML5 and eBook can be used on the iPad. Flash books are not supported on the iPad.

Rubric
Rubrics have become popular with teachers as a means of communicating expectations for an assignment, providing focused feedback on works in progress, and grading final products. At Haiku the term is used to reference the criteria that the school wants their LMS to have.

LDAP/AD
Active Directory is a database based system that provides authentication, directory, policy, and other services in a Windows environmentLightweight Directory Access Protocol is an application protocol for querying and modifying items in directory service providers like Active Directory, which supports a form of LDAP.

Short answer: AD is a directory services database, and LDAP is one of the protocols you can use to talk to it.Microsoft's version of single sign-on; Haiku supports this one; Google and federated

RTI
Real time information; as it applies to Haiku; teachers can provide hints and kudos on practice tests for immediate feedback. Completed assessment results are immediately available to teachers.
Uptime
Part of active time during which our system is either fully operational or is ready to perform its intended function.

Haiku guarantees it's uptime is 99.9%, which means it might be down up to 45 mins/month.

Clever
Clever is a program that lets a school's SIS talk with Haiku LMS so that integration can happen easily.
MOOC
Massive Open Online Course has been all the rage in the ed tech sector since the term was coined in 2008. MOOCs are revolutionizing the way students learn, and this trend is making its impact across the globe. These courses are typically free, and only require a computer and, of course, the internet, they are generally not accredited.

Currently the MOOC methods reach nearly 200 countries in 44 different languages, and have 4,500 testing centers around the world.

GBL
Game-based learning is becoming increasingly popular inside classroom walls, as teachers become more and more familiar with the process and its many benefits. GBL can be anything from learning simulations, to serious games, to using video games in the classroom. GBL is designed to balance gameplay with subject matter, and help students retain and apply what they've learned in the real world. Although it's still in the early phases.

LRMI
Learning Resource Metadata Initiative is a project aimed at improving education search and discovery via a common framework for tagging and organizing learning resources on the web.
Common Cartridge
It's a set of open standards, freely available and without royalty, developed by a global industry consortium with over 80 voting members. These standards, if followed by content developers and learning platforms, enable strict interoperability between content and systems. They also support great flexibility in the type of digital content supported (content can actually be applications) and where such content is located (content and applications in a Common Cartridge can be distributed).

Decaying Average
The Traditional Average, the Mean, weighted all data, past and present, equally. While taking all the Data from the Stream into account, this measure lacks sensitivity to the Ordered nature of Data Streams. While the Short Term Average weights the most recent data more heavily, it immediately 'forgets' the past, replacing it with the present. We need an average, which takes the past into account while weighting data by its proximity to the present. Enter the Decaying Average. With the Decaying Average, each bit of Data enters the Data Stream and immediately begins decaying.

Voice Thread
A VoiceThread allows people to have conversations and to make comments using any mix of text, a microphone, a web cam, a telephone, or uploaded audio file. VoiceThread runs inside your web browser, so there is no software to download, install, or update. Educators use VoiceThread for many different projects, from extending and documenting classroom conversations, digital student portfolios, and language practice, to creating online lectures and tutoring, virtual class spaces, and professional development training, just to name a few.
Slide Rocket
Is an online presentation platform that lets users create, manage, share and measure presentations. SlideRocket is provided via a SaaS model offered via monthly or annual subscription plans.

embed the web
In the general sense, to embed is to put one thing into another. In the sense of computer language, embedding means taking the fundamental code structure (for instance of an image) and putting it into another code object... such as a video.

Something that has been embedded into code structure can be separated from the other code structure, but serves it's function better joined to (or embedded in) the other structure.

e-rate
E-rate is a federal program designed to bring internet connectivity and telecommunications into schools. All schools receiving E-rate discounts must comply with the Internet safety educational requirements outlined in the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
