early assessments
--1st phase of classroom assessment occurs early in the school year and is undertaken to learn about students' social, academic and behavioral charateristics. --Helps teachers enhance instruction, communication and cooperation in the classroom.
instructional assessment
--2nd phase of classroom assesment used to plan and deliver instruction --i.

e. What will be taught --how it will be taught --what materials will be used --how the lesson is progressing --changes that must be made.

summative assessment
3rd & final phase of classroom assessment which helps teachers make formal decisions and recommendations about student acheivement and placement.
standardized assessment
A test which is administered, scored and interpreted in the same way for all learners.
non-standardized assessments
A test constructed for use in a sigle classroom for a single group of students
Three general ways to collect data
-- selection items --supply items --performance tasks
selection items
multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions on a test are types of this (AKA selected-response items)
supply items
aka production items, require students' to construct a response to a question or prompt; length of response can vary.

performance tasks
are an extended form of supply items and require substantial amount of time to complete, ie. book reports, journal entries, portfolios, experiments and class projects.
Observation Techniques
watching or listening to students while they carry out specificactivity or respond in a given situation (2nd major method teachers use to collect assessment data)

performance standards
Defines how well students are expected to know the content knowledge and skills and how well they are expected to perform
Validity
Accuracy and appropriateness of information obtained from an assessment.
Reliability
Extent to which an assessment consistently measures what its supposed to measure.
Bias
Systematically advantaging or disadvantaging students throughout an assessment.
