He is a 10 year old farm boy and is the protagonist in the story. He really wants coon dogs and would do anything to get them. Not only that but he is a very brave and determined person.
For example how he helped the family to get money in the time of need. He is a dynamic character because in the beginning he didn’t really know how it felt to own and take care of people he loved, but towards the end he became responsible and very strong. Taking care not only his family but his dogs and would do anything for them. Including the bond of him and his to loving dogs.Old Dan- He is one of Billy loving redbone dog. This dog is very strong and will never give up on hunting a coon.
When he gets them on a trail he will not give up, even though sometimes he gets very impatient and loses the trail. Overall he is a brave, strong, determined dog. He is a static character since he never changed and was always those great personalities. (protagonist) Little Ann- This is another of Billy red bone dog who is a girl, although she is smaller and weaker then Old Dan. She was very important; she was very smart and almost no coon can trick her.
And like her buddy Old Dan, when she was on a trail she will never give up until she gets the coon. (protagonist) Billy’s grandfather- He is the one who owns a general store and was the one who helped Billy get the dogs. As well as helping Billy with a lot of things involving coon hunting like how he entered Billy in a contest and got him involved in a lot of adventures. Billy’s dad- He is a very hard worker farmer and is really proud of his son and how he is helping making money for the family.
When he does this he starts treating Billy like a man.Billy’s mother- She is a very religious person and is always open to answer any questions about god from Billy. She is also very proud of her son Billy, but most importantly she still wants the family to move to the city so the children can get an education. Billy sisters- They weren’t really in the story to much, but they would help the mother with chores.
But were still too young to understand anything about what happens throughout the book. The Pritchard brothers- One was named Ruben he was the oldest brother and was always insulting people was ready to fight anybody. But later on in the story he dies by falling on an axe.The other brother name is Rainie although he wasn’t very bright.
He would always have tricks up his sleeve and was always ready to make a bet. They would be the antagonist of the story because they would always make fun of Billy and his dogs. Also, would always bet with Billy and try to see whose dog was better. This showed the rivalry with them and Billy. The Narrator: The Narrator is Wilson Rawls, he is the one who wrote the book and told the story.
The Conflicts: The problem (external) - Billy and his dogs experience many problems of catching the coons and the contest his in.Also, the danger of when they faced the mountain lion and all the dangers that was in the wilds. Another problem would have to be the bet of who will catch the legendary ghost coon and if Billy could do it against the Pritchard brothers. The problem (Internal) - The problem inside of him is if he really has the strength to complete all of his external problems and how far his determination can go. As well as facing the fear of when his dogs get in very difficult situations and also to soon face the death of both his dogs. Setting:The setting is in the Ozark Mountains, which was on the Cherokee lands in northern Oklahoma during the great depression.
Including the valleys and woods where Billy hunts for coons. As well as the town he visits to go get his dogs. Climax/ Suspense: The climax/most suspenseful part of the story would probably have to be when Billy and his dogs face the mountain lion. It happened when one night Billy and his dogs were hunting. Unfortunately Old Dan trees up a mountain lion instead of a coon.
Then when his dog screamed, Billy rushes over to try to save them, but the dogs end up saving Billy. They finally defeated the mountain lion, but Old Dan was very wounded and injured. This is the most suspenseful part because I wasn’t sure if the dogs were going to get killed or even if Billy was going to get killed. Also, when they did defeat the mountain lion I wondered if Old Dan would survive, since of had seriously injured he was.
Plot Summary (Overall what happened in the book): This great book called Where the Red Fern Grows was about a boy named Billy who had desperately wanted hunting dogs. So one day while he was going to through catalogs he saw a ad of 2 dogs 25$ each.Billy was so excited and did anything to earn enough cash. Then the day came and he finally got the dogs. He was so excited, that trained them and hoped for them to be great coon hunters, also made a coon trap.
Soon enough Billy became great friends with his two dogs. Then the day came of coon season and on that day his dog’s tree up a coon, but the problem was the tree was um imaginably big. But Billy would not give up; it took him hours and hours to cut it down. Then finally he did it and the dogs caught the coon. He was not only proud of himself but the ones who helped him his loving dogs.
So that was just the start of it Billy would go coon hunting almost every night and would usually catch something. Then he would give the money to his father from selling the skins. Some days it was very difficult when Billy dogs were in trouble like how Dan was stuck in a hole and Ann was trapped in ice. Fortunately, they were saved and usually in no harm. Also one day there was a challenge with the Pritchard brothers, who thought Billy dogs couldn’t catch the legendary coon. So they challenged who would get the coon first and obviously Billy dogs did.
But Billy refused to kill it and then one of the brothers attacked Billy. Then Billy dogs attacked the boys’ dog and Ruben sees it. So he runs at Billy dogs with an axe but falls and kills himself. That was the end of that and soon later Billy goes to Ruben grave and feels a lot better. Later on Billy grandfather enters Billy and his dogs in a coon hunting contest and through many challenges at the end Billy caught the most coons. Then was rewarded a 300 dollar jackpot and everyone had cheered! So Billy continues to hunt, but then one sad day had come along.
While Billy and his dogs were out hunting Old Dan had tree up a mountain lion and it attacked.Billy came running with his axe and it turned out instead of Billy saving the dogs they saved him. At the end of it they defeated the mountain lion but Old Dan was very injured. Then the next few days he died everyone was in deep sorrow and heartbroken. But especially Ann who couldn’t face the fact living without Old Dan and soon died of depression.
Billy was so sad and depressed until the day of the move, since Billy had made enough money for the family to move to the town. So Billy went to the burial of his dogs and there laid a red fern which put a smile on his face, since his mom had told him only an angel would plant a red fern.Theme: The theme of this book was determination and that it can get you anywhere you want. Like how Billy never gave up on trying to cut down the tree when the coon was stuck up there and when he did it, it was all because of his determination. Also all the danger he and his dogs went to catch the coons was all because of determination. Without it they would be nothing.
Also, the theme was to get along with the people you’re with like the relationship Billy and his dogs had which got him so far in catching coons and more.
