Some of the ideas in this article include: encourage innovation, be proactive, think incrementally, and focus attention on people (Gardner, 2009). Through modernization, human services' goals and main purposes have stayed the same. The main goal of human services is to help people and their families overcome obstacles that keep them from being self-sufficient.

Some of the obstacles include but are not imited to substance abuse disorders, the lack of education or vocational skills, medical concern, or mental illnesses. Along with help comes teaching.Human services offer help and the guidance that will eventually teach individuals to be self- sufficient. Many skills and strategies exist that must be used while working in the human services field. "Patience, listening skills and observation skills" (AXIA College, 2007, Para. 35) are all things that will help with the common intervention strategies that are used in human services.

Some aspects of clinical issues include nformed consent and confidentiality, the limits of confidentiality and setting boundaries. Before discussions proceed with a client informed consent and confidentiality must be discussed. The client must know where his or her confidentiality ends. Equally important is boundary settings. Human services professionals should not become overly involved with their clients and cases. A professional relationship must be maintained.

Many boundaries in the human service field have been set by the ethical standards of the field. Ethics is defined as a set of moral values. Ethical standards then are based on a foundational value system designed to tell us what good behavior is and what bad behavior is" (AXIA College, 2007).What individuals base their values on widely vary, therefore, a professional code of ethics has been established in many professions. At times individuals may struggle between ethical values and emotions. During these times, professionals must remember the field in which they are working.

This is possibly one reason many individuals are not suitable for a position in human services. Culture can also influence ethical behavior. Sensitivity is necessary when dealing with the differences in culture, gender, and age and can be challenging because what one culture may view as normal, another may not. While human services continue to evolve, the professionals in this field should as well. These professionals should be expected to bring new strategies and ideas into the human service field.

While working to broaden the field, the goals and purposes behind human services should never be forgotten. Keeping focused on the goals of the human service profession, learning intervention strategies and using ethical considerations will keep he professionals of human services focused on the nature and purpose of this field.References Gardner, Nicole.
