2 Analyse the changing relationships between the facilities management function and other business functions

Analyse’ again means to consider all the component parts so you need to discuss how the FM function is related to other business functions. Think about the overall business strategy – think about core services and noncore services and the fact that the FM is taking on more noncore services. The fact that FM is becoming more strategic in terms of its involvement in business continuity, supply chain effectiveness, compliance, risk management etc Then also how FM integrates with functions such as HR, finance, procurement, if it is a separate department, etc.

2.1 Understand the importance of innovation and change in delivering services within facilities management

1 Understand the changing facilities management roles and responsibilities across different organisations You need to consider what the key FM functions are and perhaps have been over the last few decades and how they are now changing. ‘Caretaker’ to ‘professional’. Project Manager, Procurement specialist, HR manager, etc etc. Lots of discussion on LinkedIn about whether FM is a profession or an industry and whether FMs should be technically competent or managers. You could include this in your disucssion.

Think about the following as well:

increasing productivity, revenue & image
decrease cost, time and risk
move to greater compliance
move to greater sustainability
move to greater business continuity
increased contract management over staff management

1    Taylor's ideas of scientific management can be regarded as the foundation for the discipline of

operations management. Do you agree? Explain how his ideas and those of the other early pioneers
contributed to more effective operations in manufacturing. How can these practices be applied to service
industries? In answering this you will need to explain what operations management is, the transformation
process, and the idea of the operations system.

2 The article `Inventory: Asset or Liability', Resource Item 4.1, raises a controversial issue, frequently discussed by management. Often marketing, accounting, distribution, production, and top management have different views on the topic. Read the article, and then summarise the arguments from the viewpoint of each of these managerial groups. Can these views be reconciled? Can these views be reconciled?

3 Read the article `JIT and MRP II could make beautiful music together' (Resource Item 8.1).

This article ties together topics we dealt with in this unit, Unit 3, Process Design, Unit 6, Quality Management, and Unit 9, Time Based Operations. The article emphasises that an integrated approach is likely to be more successful. You will benefit by reading the article again after Unit 9. In the meantime, consider whether the integrated approach described is likely to apply in all manufacturing environments.
