Kim Drinkwater Student Ref: s46536 TEACHING ASSISTANT DIPLOMA COURSE ASSIGNMENT ONE 1. Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.

I may contribute by assisting in room preparation, for example, by setting up instruments, making sure they’re clean and safe to use. Also, may help by showing children how to use the instruments. 2. What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson? My role might be to help in preparing the instruments and other equipment. Also may need to check there are enough instruments for each child ( by regularly checking inventory).

I would also need to help tidy up afterwards, helping to make sure all equipment/instruments are put back safely. 3. Describe how you act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils? I would need to have a positive attitude and be able to interact well with the children.I would also benefit from being aware of the classroom rules so I could help implement them.

4. What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately? Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence. I would have a rewards system in place to help encourage good behaviour. Also, there would be a set of consequences so children would know what happens if they don’t behave and to help deter inappropriate behaviour.I would offer lots of praise and let children know what is expected of them.

I’d also show respect to the children in all aspects. In any incidents of bullying/violence, I would stay calm, ensure other children are away from the scene. I would take the incident seriously and let children know it is not acceptable behaviour. I would also seek help from other staff if necessary. 5.

Describe how you might appropriately observe the physical abilities and skills of a nine year old boy.I would need to know what is normal development for a child of this age. I’d need to plan on when to do the observation as to not disrupt any normal activity. I would need to ensure the child is unaware they are being observed so they don’t feel inhibited or perform especially. Dependent upon activity, I would need to decide on the best type of observation, for example, time sampling or structured observation.

I would need to record my observations and provide any feedback to the teacher or other member of staff as directed.
