In old nationalisms, nations were racially or ethnically oriented. This is not so with new nationalisms. If nations are defined as in the former nationalism, three questions come up. These are which groups to be recognized nationally? Is their criterion for distinguishing cultural group nationhood? Why should those cultures that are established gain priority over the new upcoming groups? Cultural oriented people have escaped from the above questions that the people of the nations are constant.
They think that the simply reflect the previous ethnic ways. If they take their stand seriously on being cultural oriented, they then need to allow all the upcoming cultures. The new cultures are very fragile and need more protection (Walker, 1998). To defend nationalism, theorists have these two tasks: justification and exclusion.
On justification, they must muse on why one should stand out of the normal negotiations of the society that is pluralist andon exclusion, why others are not justified (Walker, 1998). The three major ways of justification is through religion, race and now culture. For those in defense of culture they say that culture is like “environmental habitats” (Walker, 1998) that shapes the values and believes of an individual. If so, then the minority groups are free to thrive in their various environments.
It is therefore hard to get an exclusionary base to remove them. This part gives reasons to show that gay is a legitimate culture. The culture is legitimate because just as others it began like a movement that is distinctly different from the rest. It has a cultural orientation; it has a history, literature, and seeks to survival from the state for they are under sharp attack from other groups. The only challenge that this culture has is that it is quite narrow as compared to the other societies or cultures, although this should make one underestimate this cuulture.
They have a system that has the capacity to make its way through to recognition. In addition, people may just reject gay people as a culture in the Diaspora (Walker, 1998). This should therefore not imply that they do not have frights as other people such as being politically oriented and having influence. Those Diasporas that are not defined by territories are legitimate nations too. The major problem in neglecting such groups is that they would at one time cause political instability. This rises from their infringed rights, and so they will keep on insisting and eventually cause the instability.
Nations should therefore be keen on this. The current world with its technology allows all sorts groups to come up. They further identify themselves as unique cultural groups. The main thing therefore is to promote respect among all people. It is of prime importance that all people should have a positive view of the world.
