This particular case involves Alex Evans, the owner, CEO and president of the Evans RV Wholesale Supply and Distribution Company. The article fully describes how said firm is organized into groups namely: the warehouse, retail sales division, service department and accounting and finance groups. Accordingly, the case is filled with details as to how the company is organized.

Alex is said to be a benevolent owner who is apt in taking care of the loyal employees but also is in the lookout for people who take advantage of his company. Correspondingly, the firm is composed of a mixture of veterans and younger individuals who are starting to learn the business. Worthy of noting at this point is how Alex puts on effort in instituting new, employee-centered human resource policies. As this is the case, however, the company is still said to be a traditional hierarchically structured organization.

Alex further introduced major changes from the time he purchased and took over the company. Being cognizant of the opportunities and threats present in the environment of the firm, he used those to further grow the business. He made a shift from being a retailer to becoming a distributor to the other RV parts and supply businesses.

Mr. Evans is not without problems; however, as he is confronted with the uncertainty of the changes in the industry and competition and the monthly burden of repaying the loan he needed to secure the business. He tries to keep abreast with the latest management techniques by attending several conferences around the country. He has been considering having a team-based organization to further the firm’s performance and profitability. This being the case, Alex announced that at the beginning of the next fiscal year, the company would be changing to a team-based arrangement.

I. Statement of the problem:

I see no problem to speak of in terms of OB (organizational behavior). I personally do not think this particular case applies. While it may be very well related to a topic that is tackled in OB (that is, teams), it does not speak of anything that involves how people think, act, interact and behave in organizations. This case’s focus is mainly on the managerial function of organizing which can be a primary concern on the fields of management in general and Human Resources.
