Prostitution ranks among the most controversial concern in today’s world. The argue usually centers around two groups; those who believe that prostitution should be allowed and should be legalized; and those who believe that prostitution should not be allowed and should never be legalized. Prostitution is an offering of sexual activity for money.

The “buyer” receives sex without any responsibility for procreation or sentimental attachment; at the same time, the “seller” makes a living through this exchange (Schaefer, 2003). Prostitution is often called “the world’s oldest profession” for good reason.Prostitutes are found in the streets, brothels, and adult films; on the Internet; and in the phone book and classified ads (Kinsey et al. , 1948). The major motive for prostitution was economic.

Many poor women were drawn to prostitution as a means of survival. This paper helps the reader to have a deeper understanding towards prostitution. It provides grounds why prostitution should be legalized and why it should not be legalized. As my opinion, it should be legalized and recognized in our society.

Prostitution should be legalized; it should be regulated for the benefit of sex industry workers, those they serve and society in general.Prostitution is a fact of life; it has existed in every known civilization, past and present, and will continue to exist. As long as it remains a criminal endeavor, female street prostitutes will be at the mercy of their often vicious pimps. Worse, prostitution will continue to be unregulated, and potentially deadly diseases will be passed to customers and their unsuspecting wives or partners. Moreover, the police department will continue to waste its resources pursuing the perpetrators of a victimless crime.Allowing it to operate as a business, would abolish pimps, reduce drug addiction, provide a safe environment, introduce health checks on a regular basis and allow the sex trade workers to have dignity and self-esteem (Langley, 2005).

It also has benefits for the public at large, as prostitutes would be off the streets. Police would be able to concentrate on crime and other policing issues. The potential for millions of dollars of tax money having to be spent on missing women investigations would be eliminated. Amsterdam’s Red-Light District Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam’s red-light district.

Tourists wend their way through the narrow streets by the canals, doing “window shopping” (Rathus, 2005). Prim grandmothers sometimes join the audiences at the live sex shows. It is estimated that several hundred thousand prostitutes work in the United States. Some prostitutes are called streetwalkers; ply their trade by literally walking the streets and hawking their wares to pedestrians and those who drive by. Others, who may be connected with “massage” or “escort” services let their customers’ fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages, they also advertise online.Prostitution is legal in some counties in the state of Nevada, although it is restricted to regulated, state licensed brothels.

Legalizing prostitution and collecting taxes from working girls could raise at least 250m a year for the Treasury (Beltsfast Telegraph, 2001). Economists studied data from a website set up for prostitutes' clients and analyzed the prices paid for a range of "personal services". The academics looked at a website, called "Punternet", which contains several thousand reports describing clients' visits to prostitutes.Dr Peter Moffatt of the University of East Anglia and Dr Simon Peters of Manchester University estimate gross earnings in the sector are about 770m a year. It also found that prostitutes earn most in their youth, peaking at 19. 3 years, after which their earning capacity slides.

But customers give older working girls, with an ideal age of 30. 6 years, better marks (Moskvy, 2004). Deputies in Yaroslavl Region are proposing to legalize prostitution in the region. They believe that this will help to raise considerable extra income for the budget.

Trade in weapons and drugs and prostitution - for example, with a sensible approach these girls could bring in at least another 10 per cent to the regional budget. All the funds received as a result of the labor of ladies of the night may be used, in his opinion, to increase children's allowances and on other social needs of the region, the Regnum agency reports. According to preliminary calculations, legalization of prostitution could bring in R700m roubles (Moskvy, 2004). Almost two-thirds of the European American males in Kinsey’s sample (Kinsey et al. , 1948) reported visiting a prostitute at least once.

About 15% to 20% visited them regularly. The use of prostitutes varied with educational level, however. By the age of 20, about 50% of Kinsey’s non-college-educated single males, but only 20% of his college-educated males, had visited a prostitute. By the age of 25, the figures swelled to about two-thirds for non-college-educated males but only to slightly above 25% for college men.

Kinsey’s data foreshadowed a falling off of experience with prostitutes that seems linked to the decay of the sexual double standard. Young men in recent generations appear to be less likely to visit prostitutes than those in Kinsey’s day, because they are ore likely to become sexually initiated with their girlfriends.Prostitution should not Be legalized; people involving prostitution are prone to have AIDS (sexually transmitted diseases). In fact, there are four classes of victims: the prostitute, the client, the spouse and the children.

The client is also a victim because he/she is cheated out of true love in the sexual relationship. The client also is deceived into believing that one-night stands will satisfy what only will be found in a committed monogamous relationship.Theft by deception is a crime. Anti-prostitution measures are catching on in Europe. Finland banned prostitution in 2006, Bulgaria outlawed the practice in October and Norway is reportedly on the verge of ending legalized sex for sale. "We should be very definite in saying that selling flesh is a crime," said Rumen Petkov, Bulgarian interior minister.

In Sweden, where prostitution is illegal, authorities have stepped up prosecution of paying customers, instead of the usual tactic of arresting prostitutes. The tragic deaths of five young women in Suffolk have brought to the fore some difficult issues that need to be addressed about prostitution in the UK. As the bodies were discovered in quick succession, police told the media they believed all the victims were sex workers who worked on the streets of Ipswich. Fear and anger prompted a high-profile public debate about the laws, morals and ethics surrounding prostitution. Nurses have become a strong voice in this debate.

For instance, 81 per cent of nurses at the 2005 RCN congress voted in favor of a resolution calling for the decriminalization of prostitutes. The nurses' agenda has always been about protecting female and male prostitutes - the very young, as well as adults who either choose or are forced to work in the sex industry. Sex workers are one of the most vulnerable groups in society when it comes to sexual health problems and violence. The current legal approach is complicated. People still find it difficult to outline the law.

Suffice to say the sex industry still operates in many settings, including the streets, and sex workers are demonstrably still in danger. There are many interests to be served when it comes to legislating on prostitution, some more powerful than others, and there are genuine differences of opinion about how to tackle all aspects of cause and effect. But those difficulties have to be confronted by brave policy makers if people are to be kept safe or diverted away from the sex trade. Anyone who believes that an eternal demand for these services will always guarantee supply has to decide how those who choose to earn their living in this way can be protected from harm. And lastly, prostitution is not "sex work," it is brutality against women.

It exists because major numbers of men are given social, moral and legal permission to buy women on demand; because pimps and traffickers prey on women's poverty and inequality; and because it is a last ditch survival strategy, not a choice, for millions of the world's women. Thus, opposing prostitution and the sex industry don’t make you a conservative, a moralist or an apologist for some political party or group. It helps make you a feminist and a human rights advocate. It is not clear that or why prostitution should be prohibited? Suppose that two people voluntarily enter into a transaction with each other. We might assume that both parties imagine that they will gain from it otherwise they would not have entered into the transaction.

There would be a presumption that the rest of us should not interfere unless there are particular reasons for doing so and that the transaction should be legal unless there is a particular justification for making it a crime. If the transaction is sexual intercourse in return for money, what would be the justification for legally prohibiting it?Not everyone believes that banning prostitution is the best way to protect vulnerable individuals. In my analysis, prostitution should be legalized. I believe that legalizing prostitution would help cut the incidences of rape.

Legalizing it means people don’t have to go in the dark to do that “thing”. Moreover, prostitution would bring in taxes to fight poverty and would improve the lives of those who are not working. Thus, prostitution brings benefits to the public as a whole. Therefore, people should recognize and consider prostitution as a part in our society today.
