I think there are many lines in the Shakespeare play "The Tempest" that make the audience imagine things they have not seen and to make them believe people on stage have thoughts and attitudes that are actually only acting. Firstly I think the words in lines 196-206 that help the audience imagine this are "flamed amazement," "Jove's lightning," and "sulphurous roaring. " To me the quotations suggest power, explosiveness and chaos. The quotation "flamed amazement" to me, it suggests that Ariel is causing havoc and appeared to them as terrifying fire.
I say this because flames are uncontrollable. Also Shakespeare gives me the image that each individual flame is a person, and when one flame moves in the wind violently it symbolises a persons running around terrified. The second quotation "Jove's lightening" is a powerful way to describe the weather at the time of the storm. The word "Lightning" recommends the weather around the storm as a flash of disgrace. "Jove" stands for Jupiter, and Jupiter is a vigorous roman god called Zeus. Many ledges say he throws bolts of lightning along with control of all other gods.
Shakespeare gives me the imagery from this quotation of, powerful lightning surrounding the ship. But this lightning is very strong as it is the most destructive lightning of all, the bolt of Zeus. Using this roman god in the description, give the audience the effect and understanding of the power that Ariel can posses. Lastly, the quotation "sulphurous roaring," is very explosive and will push the audience to believe that they are at the scene of the storm. The word "sulphurous" is plural for sulphur.
Sulphur is a chemical element that is very deadly. Therefore when Ariel states "sulphurous roaring" she is describing how the sound on the boat is. The sound on the boat is powerful as the word "sulphurous" suggests. To me I think that the way Shakespeare has written the play is to show the reader/audience that Ariel is proud of creating the storm and that she is modest. Shakespeare makes the layout of his plays very special, for example, when Ariel describes the terror and damage of the ship the layout is listed.
The effect of Ariel speaking in many short phrases, as lists of actions, in his first two speeches, is that is shows momentum and movement of the pay. It also shows the Ariel is creating chaos at a very fast pace. In the play the relationship changes between Prospero and Ariel. Prospero threats Ariel saying that he will send her back where he came from. The language used is quite angry and up tight.
Overall, Shakespeare forces the audience to believe the people on stage have thoughts and attitudes that are only acting.
