There are four main functions of management in a health care setting that all managers will be performing at various times during their supervisory term which are planning, organizing, controlling, and leading.
Planning is “the process of setting performance objectives and determining what actions should be taken to accomplish them. ” Organizing is “the process of defining tasks, allocating resources, and arranging and coordinating the activities of individuals and groups to implementing plans.”Controlling is “the process of measuring work performance, comparing results to objectives, and taking corrective actions as needed. ” Leading may be defined as “the process of arousing people enthusiasm to work had to fulfill plans and accomplish objectives. ” I applied the four functions of management in my previous job as the manager of Verizon a cell phone company. An example of planning was I as the market manager I had a goal of increasing sales during the month of June.
I first needed to spend time mapping out the necessary step my team and I must take so that we could increase sales numbers. The steps included things like increasing advertisements in a particular region, placing some items on sell, and increasing the amount of required customers to sales representatives to contact. By doing so I organized the steps into a logical pattern so they could be followed. An example of how I applied organizing is identifying roles and ensuring that I assigned the right amount of individuals and teams to carry out activities.I also had to delegate authority, assign work, and provide directions so that each teams could work towards the events with having barriers in their way. An example of controlling is once I noticed my team was behind in sales half way of June I needed to put necessary provisions in place to ensure the other half of June was twice as productive as the first half so that by the end of the month the original sales goals would have been met.
The last example of the four functions is leading. I applied leading in my previous job by connecting with my team on an interpersonal level by communicating, motivating encouraging, and inspiring each individual towards a higher level of productivity. The most important role for a health care manger and leader in the diversified healthcare industry is to recognize the transition that involves a adopting a second and concurrent career of equal importance his or her occupation. There are many managers who find it difficult to balance two sides of the role because they are well trained to his or her specialties but enter management will little or no preparation on management, which leads to lack preparation and understanding of the requirements of the management side of the combined roles, which leads to discomfort in management matters. The most significant aspect related to health care management that I want to gain by taking this class is how to be better with time management because to be a successful manager I will need to develop the ability to appropriately balance the side of the dual role.
