The aim of this report is to compare and contrast different organisational structures and cultures within businesses, observe how the relationship between an organisations structure and culture can impact the performance of the business. Discussing individual approach to the business environment.
Comparing different approaches to management and leadership in organisations.Organisational structure works within an organisational culture. The two are very much connected. Organisational structure will deal with the set up of the culture.
Organizational structure is the framework of task and authority relationships in a company ,that allow managers to coordinate/motivate people. Organizational culture is a set of shared company values and norms ,that shape employee and group interactions.Analysis and Findingsa) The role of management is to create supportive environment and focus on problem solving to improve the quality of work environment within organisation. As we know money and profit making is a very important factors of organisations, but with weak approach to organisations structure and culture, business can not survive and making a growth of it, entitative approach is key factor which underlies to every organisation. Two chosen organisations – Gordon Ramsay restaurant chain and Pret A Manager Sandwich shops, provide similar service such as making and serving food, but have different organisational structure and culture within organisation itself.Pret A Manager sandwich chain have very human oriented organisational structure and culture.
It gives its leftover food to the homeless, and plans to recruit more of them as apprenticies and drive to attract more school leavers, which shows the philosophical side of Pret A Manager chain. By employing homeless people and school leavers with no experience The organisation wants to show they are not ignorant to social problems. Pret A Manager do not require experienced and well qualified level of employees. They employ people from all kind of backgrounds who are allowed to work legally.
Company pays its staff above the minimum wage and provide also flexible hours, that shows that Pret A Manager treats their employees well and value the work and environment in and around the company. They also provide training courses development possibilities in career for their employees.I would describe Pret A Manager sandwich chain as “Brains”, because they work together for a common good and learn it from the beginning. The company is a system of motivation for people giving job satisfaction and of course rewards. It relies a lot on the structure of the company to develop common good and a better place to work with help from its members (staff, management). In contrast Gordon Ramsay restaurant chain is slightly different from Pret A Manager organisational structure and culture.
Unlike Pret A Manager, Gordon Ramsay is very famous English chef, who has been awarded two Michellin stars and has opened many successful restaurants around the globe. His organisational structure and culture within his business differs. Gordon Ramsay business could be described as very “Cultural”, the Management believes recruiting only the best people would create a unique culture in his restaurant chains.“I’m lucky enough to work with the most amazing people, whose hard work and dedication is an endless source of inspiration to me” – G. Ramsay.
They are looking for employees with good experience and they try to establish strong work ethic. They are attracted to employ “superstars”, people with personalities and abilities to carry on their existing passion to deeper success for the company. Gordon Ramsay company believes that staff can move business forward. G.Ramsay company wants to build talent on their employees, their organisational structure and culture are designed to provide potential employees with unique work ethic which will be useful in future for the career growth.b) Organisations culture and structure results in positive or either negative employees work performance with help of Management on the particular Company.
Pret A Manager sandwich chain have a very motivated organisational culture, they motivate people with no experience to learn and progress in work environment. The structure of the organisation believes that investing in employees development, they will create strong work style and develop the future for the company. Pret A Manager sandwich chain believes that organisations structure can create effective and strong culture, which will result in positive performance of business. G.
Ramsay company have a very dedicated and focused organisational structure wich results in effective organisational structure. Their aim is to recruit the best people and make special organisational culture in the company, that differes from any other usual company in the market.c) There are many factors, which influence individuals behaviour at work. The first factor is attitudes and expectations from the Management and what they expect from employees, its related to wage and overall appreciation of the work done. Another factor is the environment of the work ( how clean and suitable it is,safety).
Succesfull business tend to be more positive, that’s why another important factor which could influence individual behaviour at work is overall success of the business. Profitability and recognition. Another important factor that influences individuals behaviour at work is motivation from the Management and career growth. If the Management isa) Leadership at every level has to be established, starting from the top. Leadership has to be clarified, expressed and put into action.
Not just once per month or quarter, but every moment of the day. Has to be who sets the example, which makes sure things get done, who makes sure things are done right, and who sets expectations for the entire business, which is in charge. Gordon believes it will be his menu that people come to taste. He’s use a responsive democratic style by evaluating requirements for skills and training. For him the employees makes they susses, they only recruiting the best people high experience, offer an exciting learning environment in our dedicated skills centre and a range of formal learning opportunities. Investing in the development of all staff in order to grow talent within the company and move the business forward.
Pret a Manger a manager’s role is demanding! One minute they’re accountants, the next sergeant majors, then they’re psychiatrists, five minutes later they’re nannies, trainers, IT specialists, firemen, first aiders and entrepreneurs. At Pret we are respectful of this. We have created a ‘recipe’ for our shops, so that each of our managers knows which “ingredients” they should be working with to run a successful Pret shop. They employ many different nationalities and value the cosmopolitan feel this gives the company. Recruit inexperienced staff and invest in train and develop.
Pret plans to expand the Pret apprenticeship scheme for the homeless and increase the number of apprentices to 70 this year. The scheme offers an opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness by providing the most valuable gift of all - a paid job in a lively social environmentb) Organizational theory and management theory is used in many aspects of a working business. Many people strive to adhere to the theory to help them become better at their jobs or more successful in life, although this may lead to them having to sacrifice some of their personal principles in order to succeed. Managers reading the work of leading writes on the subject might see in their ideas and conclusions a message about how they should behave.
This will influence their attitudes towards management practice. In Gordon Ramsay the trick is to educate everyone to concentrate on their own skills and seek support for anything else. Mutual respect for all colleagues is the cement that makes this work. The plate is carried from the kitchen to the table by a hundred unseen hands and the wine is poured with the bending of a troop of elbows invisible to any guest.
Chefs and their brigade must understand everything about their kitchen and not just the contents of the cooking pot.c) Different approaches to evaluation of training discussed herein indicate that the activities involved in evaluation of training are complex and not always well-structured. Since evaluation activities in training situations involve multiple goals associated with multiple levels, evaluation should perhaps be viewed as a collaborative activity between training designers, training managers, trainers, floor managers, and possibly others. The characteristics of the information communicated through the system are also of importance.
It is more complicated to evaluate the exchange of informal than formal information.Different types of organisations could have a need for different evaluation criteria. There are, however, many ways of categorising these various approaches. Whatever from categorisation is adopted, it is possible to identify a number of other approaches.
The classical approach emphasis on purpose, formal structure, hierarchy of management, technical requirement, and common principles of organisation. It is helpful, therefore, to trace major developments in management and organisational behaviour and what has led to the concentration of attention on such topics as motivation, groups, leadership, structure, and organisation development.ConclusionWhy is the culture and the internal process so important? Many leadership theorists and the coaches have found that ineffective leadership often tends to be one of the major causes of an organizations diminishing and weakening. Even a government example from history can be ancient Rome. During a series of terrible emperors the structure and culture was strong enough to often overcome it, even for decades at the time without strong top end leadership eventually the mid level governing and organisational culture collapsed resulting in the eventual failure of the culture.
Great lairdship is needed for an organisation to have strong culture. Gordon always make sure if the staff are fallowing his style, and providing good service and quality. His chooses only the top place in the word to set a restaurant, only in high streets. Pret a Manger use different strategy by focusing more expansion, they want to fight against unemployment, which is very actual right now.
