My favorite teacher would have to be my former co-teacher, Mr. Adrian. He was practically the reason that adored going to work everyday.
Mr. Adrian had been married for 8 years, had no children, was and only child himself and had never worked a day in his life was unlike any other person that I had ever met. When I was around him I felt like a child that never endured a dull moment. Mr.
Adrian and I worked together in an after-school program. In our classroom we had children from ages 5 to 13 from all different backgrounds and lifestyles. Each day I went to work I was absolutely ready to see how the day would go from start to finish. It didn't matter if I woke up on the wrong side of the bed each morning, when I went to work I knew I was going to have a good day. My day started at 6:30 Monday thru Friday.
Our first task was to pick up children who needed transportation from home to the childcare center. We always had to wake up before talking with each other, but once we started conversation, there was no ending it. We talked and joked about the work day before, what we were going to do that particular day, laughed at what was on the radio and laughed at each-other.As soon as we started to have fun we were pulling back into the childcare center parking lot. What I loved best about Mr. Adrian was that he was a real joker.
Each afternoon he would come into the center, clock in and then we would began our transportation route from the public schools back to the center. Once we were in the center, I would direct all of the children down the hall into our classroom. We usually were back at the center by 4:15 in the afternoons, so on a daily basis Mr. Adrian would park our bus, check the school kitchen for any leftover snacks and then sit in the restroom until about 5:15.
As some people say, out of sight out of mind and when you think of it, he was just like that. Because he was unseen, the other staff never noticed that I was the one in a classroom full of hyperactive children and no co-teacher. As Mr. Adrian sat in the restroom, he would prank call the center. This was so hilarious.
The staff would fall for this every time. Most of the time they wouldn't even know what to say back to the caller on the other end. When Mr. Adrian did finally come out of the restroom, it was time to straighten and sanitize classrooms and prepare students for departure home.Just so that no one could say he wasn't working, he would take out all of the trash in the building, lollygag with the parents and play with the students, clock out and go home. Never would he come to our classroom which was at the end of the hall.
Once he was out of the building he would call me on my personal phone and tell me that he was “Out. ” Mr. Adrian is my favorite teacher because he is a one man show. He really know how to have a good time know matter the day, month, season or year!
