After reading my assigned work for this week and reviewing the video “Teacher Survival Skills”, I have a different outlook as well as having much more admiration for teachers then I did before. Teacher’s job is never done and never ending. Dr. Jim Zabloski talked about ways to be a successful teacher as well as skills so that a first year teacher would be able to survive.

Dr. Zabloski mentioned in the video five teacher survival skills. He talked briefly on being organized, management, consistency, getting to know your students and that you do not have to talk some much to be an effective teacher. Following these five skills of survival, one is bound to become great teacher. To be an effective teacher one much understand their students.

We do this by knowing the students, their likes and dislikes as well as their needs. For an example: one student may be having difficulty in reading and another in math. Both students have and requires a need, but in different areas. So as their teacher we must provide them with reassurance that we are here to help them succeed and finding ways that will interest them to want to learn.

Although, a teacher job is not easy, we find some who really love their profession. The three teachers in the video shared their experience when they were a first year teacher. One of the teachers talked about being nervous, not sure if she would do well on her own and being prepared. The second teacher talked about time management and learning to be their teacher and not their friend. And the last teacher had to learn to create curriculums and stated that teachers should use all the resources that are available to them. Teaching is a natural talent.

It is not just another job, it is a highly respected profession. In our classrooms we should praise our students, respect the students, make learning comfortable and showing the students that they can achieve much more than they know.
