In the play “Macbeth” written by William Shakespeare it is difficult to determine who is more responsible for the murder of King Duncan, Macbeth or Lady Macbeth? It is difficult to determine who is more responsible because each Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have done so many things to each be named the guiltier person. Macbeth is guiltier than Lady Macbeth because Macbeth actually committed the crime of killing king Duncan. When Macbeth is on his way to kill King Duncan he says, “I go, and it is done.

The bell invites me.Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell” (II. i. 62-64). While Macbeth is coming back from committing the crime of killing King Duncan he says, “I have done the deed. Didst thou not hear a noise? ” (II.

ii. 14) we can see that in the citation Macbeth has just now finished killing Duncan. Because of this Macbeth is guiltier than Lady Macbeth because he has actually committed the deed of killing Duncan. Throughout the story there is a motif of guilt that Macbeth feels before and after he committed the crime.Macbeth is guiltier than Lady Macbeth because Macbeth has motive that Lady Macbeth did not have to kill King Duncan. When the three witches approach Macbeth they say, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, which shalt be king hereafter! ” (I.

iii. 48-51) because some of the prophecy that was predicted by the three witches came true, Macbeth has started having thoughts about if he was going to become king and how would he be able become king.Macbeth wants to be king so that he could have the power over others instead of being the one to serve, in other to become king he kills the current king and other people as to cover his track and secure his place as the new king. Macbeth is guiltier than Lady Macbeth because he had a choice of not killing Duncan.

When Macbeth is pressured by Lady Macbeth he says “I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with fairest show. False face must hide what false heart doth know” (I. Vii. 79-82 ).

As seen in this citation Macbeth has made his final decision to commit the deed of killing Duncan of his own free will, this act makes him guiltier than Lady Macbeth. As seen above in the following paragraphs Macbeth is shown to be guiltier because he had motive to kill Duncan, and thoughts of killing Duncan to attain the throne. Now below in the following paragraphs about Lady Macbeth we will see even though she is guilty of the crime committed she is less guilty than Macbeth as seen below. Lady Macbeth is less guilty than Macbeth because Lady Macbeth made the plan. When Lady Macbeth hears of the news that Macbeth has she says, “Only look up clear to alter.

Favor ever is to fear. Leave all the rest to me” (I. V. 74-76).

In this scene we see that Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that he should relax and she’ll take care of everything. This is important because we see that Lady Macbeth made out the plan to kill Duncan but never did she actually kill Duncan with her own two hands, this makes her less guilty than Macbeth because he was the one who actually committed the crime.Lady Macbeth is less guilty than Macbeth because Lady Macbeth pressured Macbeth into killing king Duncan. When Lady Macbeth is pressuring Macbeth to kill Duncan she says,“What beast was’t then, and that made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do, then you where a man; and more than what you were, you would be so much more the man. ” (I. Vii.

47 – 51) in this citation we can see how Lady Macbeth is characterizing Macbeth as weak and not a man. In another scene we will how she is still pressuring him. Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valor as thou art in desire wouldst thou have that which esteem’st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting “I dare not” want upon “I would,” like the poor cat I’ th’ adage? ” (I. Vii.

39 – 45). These are important events in the story because Lady Macbeth kept characterizing Macbeth as weak and not a man he felt as if needed to prove himself a prove, even though Lady Macbeth does this to get Macbeth to kill Duncan she still has not actually killed him.Macbeth had a choice to listen to her or to not listen. Lady Macbeth is less guilty than Macbeth because Lady Macbeth framed the guards making it seem as if they killed Duncan, while covering up what Macbeth did. While waiting for Macbeth she says, “The doors are open, and the surfeited grooms do mock their charge with snores. I have drugged their possets that death and nature do contend about them, whether they live or die.

”(II. ii. 5-8). In this citation we can see that Lady Macbeth is boasting about framing the guards and the murder of Duncan.

In this scene the important event is that is frames the drunken guards for the murder of King Duncan that Macbeth has now committed. The key word is that she framed the guards, she did not kill the guards as Macbeth did or actually killed the King. In “Macbeth” it shows many reasons why both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are more responsible for the death of king Duncan, I believe that Macbeth is more responsible for the murder because he was the who decided to kill Duncan of his own choice and also because he was the one who actually committed the deed.
