Are we, Citizens of the free world ready to elect a 'Female President' in 2016? I consider myself a liberal/idealist in relation to my political views and rallied tirelessly during both terms for the election of President Barack Obama. I currently would like to believe that we as a country not only elected but, re-elected our first African-American President can move beyond the stigmatizing classifications such as race, gender or sexual orientation and elect an individual on qualifications, even if the list includes a women.Susan Carroll, a professor at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, said, “It’s easier to embrace the concept than it is to talk about names.
” (Zernike 2008). I however, stand by my liberal and idealist views as I have participated in bringing the race wall down. I believe this ‘Great Country’ is on the verge and closer than we realize in electing leaders that are yes well- qualified but, more importantly the true faces of the people they will represent, nationally as well as globally, even as she goes by the name of ‘Madam President’.The United States of America, is the country that is most rivaled and imitated worldwide. One of this country’s most notably cantos The Star Spangle Banner, written by Francis Scott Key, sums up what we represent “ O’er land of the free, home of the brave”.
The last line of a song, sung with our hand on our hearts is coveted and longed for by many immigrants worldwide. There are many who are willing to brave sharks infested waters and scale guarded fences illegally “the estimate is at more than “207,000 ” that entered the United States. In 2011” (Alden 2013) and land on our shores to experience our lifestyle, earnings and opportunities. We lead in most industries foreign and domestic, our dollars are one of the top three currencies used in foreign trade and we lead the world in fashions and trends.
Why then do we, a country that aims to be ‘First” lag behind in the concept that a women can rule when there have been female rulers dating back to , “when Ptolemy Auletes died and left his kingdom in his will to his eighteen year old daughter, Cleopatra” (Cleopatra), and who reigned Egypt for 21 years. And prior to Cleopatra’s illustrious and scandalous reign “ the first to be named by the sources was Ku-baba, who ruled the Mesopotamian City-State of Ur round 2500 BCE” (Worldwide). As the history books and sources confirm the power that women have held in ancient civilizations, we cannot be dismissive of the fact that women, have been elected as leader in 58 developed as well as underdeveloped countries from 1040-2013.Most notables include,” Peron (Argentina), Marcos (Philippines), Corazon (Philippines), Dreifuss (Switzerland), Rousseff (Brazil), Halanen (Finland), McAleese (Ireland) and Geun-Hye (South Korea)” (Female Presidents). Since it is widely known that powerful female leaders are not a first of a kind, or analogous to the recent accomplishment of President Obama ascertaining from a women’s perspective only, then what accounts for the delay? We make up more than half the populace, so we out number men, more women graduate from college than men, “ every year since 1985, according to the Census Bureau, women have outnumbered men in graduating from college” (Terrance), which quantifies our education and we vote at a higher rate than men, which says while it may be flawed we still believe in our country’s political systems and the suffrage movement is not something even in its post –feminist stage women are taking for granted.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came close to nabbing the Democratic nomination in 2008 before falling to President Barack Obama” (Bufkin), and she has certainly raised the bar for other women seeking the office of ‘President’. Mrs. , Clinton has not only exhibited her abilities and strength not only in her role as Secretary of State earning the respect of world leaders but, as a ‘Stand by your Man’ First Lady. She has been a good role model for women and she is smart and of likable character.
I could not help cheering for her during her recent testimony before congress regarding the situation in Benghazi when she angrily stated "What difference, at this point, does it make? " and defended her handling of the raid on a US consulate Libya” (Ghattas). It brought to my mind the memorable quote from the movie A League of Their Own and just like “there is no crying in baseball” there is no crying before congress. If Mrs. Clinton, with a 69% job approval rating, decides not to throw in the towel to occupy the “Oval Office ” and remains on the speech circuit I cannot blame her but, will certainly be disappointed.
I agree with many of her interpretation of good government, admire her as a woman and trust in her commitment to making the world a better place for all people. My only hope is that in 2016, the media, pundits and supporters with deep pockets decide to get behind a female candidate with similar qualities as they did with Hillary Clinton, i. e. , Waren (R-Mass), Gillibrand (D-New York), Harris (D-San Francisco), Hassan D-New Hampshire), Bachmann, (R-Minn) or maybe even Michele Obama, (FLOUTUS), the current and most admirable First Lady of the United States.
