Essay Animal Farm Question: Compare and contrast Napoleon and Snowball. What techniques did they use in their struggle of power? Napoleon is a large boar at the farm.
He is not much of a talker, but he 'has a reputation of getting his own way'. In the book he is an allegory of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the animal rebellion, because he often changes the policy and his actions, his secret activities, his intentionally betrayal and manipulation of the animals and his use of the fear of the animals to his benefits. To take over the farm, he uses the dogs on the farm to control the rest of the animals. After driving snowball away, Napoleon gets full power by using the pigs as his right hand and by using one of them, Squealer, for his propaganda.
Also he threatens the animals so that they will not go against him. When the time goes by, he changes the commandments for his benefit and at the end all the pigs learned to walk straight and started to behave much like the humans against whom they originally revolted.Napoleon eats of the fine porcelain from Mr Jones, wears his clothes and smokes his pipe. After a while he only give commands and shows himself only when it is necessary.
Eventually he takes the place of Mr Jones as a dictator at the Farm. Snowball is Napoleon's rival and original head of the farm when Mr Jones was chased away. He is more intelligent then Napoleon and is a great speaker. In the book he is an allegory of Leon Trosky, but also some parts of Vladimir Lenin. In the book he wins over most of the animals and gains their trust by leading very successful first harvest.
Unfortunately he is driven out of the farm by Napoleon. After he was chased away, Napoleon speaks after his back and say that he was evil, corrupt and even that he secretly sabotaged the animals efforts, for example by destroying the windmill, to improve the farm. All that Snowball wanted was to help the animals to get their utopia. Compare and ContrastIn the book, Snowball uses his ideas, speeches and his success in debates to conquer the other animals to his side. Napoleon, on the other hand, is getting the attention of the animals by using manipulation and deal-making.
Within the political system, Snowball seems to work within it, why Napoleon get around it. Napoleon understands the role of force, and what use it has in political control. This is noticeable by his use of the dogs by sending Snowball away from the farm.Snowball does not do anything about the bullying tactics from Napoleon.
He does nothing to prevent the growing of power in the hands of the pigs, nor does he stop the unequal dividing of the goods in the pigs their favor. Napoleon seems to have a powerful, egocentric desires, while Snowball seems to think of himself as a genius who should be the one to guide the farm toward success. Neither one of the two has the same desires as the animals at the farm and so neither stands for the socialist ideals of Animal Farm.
