A child’s development are all interconnected. Different aspects of development can affect one another. Development is holistic, which means one area of development interlinks with another. If a a child's speech is not as developed as its peers due to a physical disability they will not be able to communicate effectively with other children or adults. This could affect their emotional development as they may feel their opinion and needs are not being met due to their failure to communicate.

Their Social development may be affected if they have a Physical disability e. g. cerebral palsy, a long term injury, a chronic illness, malnutrition or spinabifider as this may mean that they can not go out and play and struggle to join in with other children's games. Resulting in less opportunities to build relationships or friendships with the other children. If a child has a hearing problem they may not be able to hear instructions and information.

This may affect their intellectual development. Other factors that can affect intellectual development is failure to differentiate the work to match the ability to each child. If the work is too difficult the child may give up and feel inadequate. If the work is too easy the child may finish the work and become bored and disruptive also, you are failing them as you are not fulfilling their full potential. There are many factors that affect and influence a child’s or a young persons development.

As child development is holistic it is difficult to determine the impact on a single area of a child or young persons development Background – Parents lifestyle and parenting skills– If a parent is a substance user ( drugs or alcohol ) then they may not be there for their children either physically as they may leave the child in the house on their own while they look for drugs or out doing crime to fund their drug habit but also emotionally as when they are at home they will be intoxicated and not talk or care for their children. The parent may end up in jail for the crimes they comity so the children may be taking into care or looked after by another member of the family. Parents who work long hours may not be around for their children to. A Child whose parents lives with parents with mental health problems i. e. depression may suffer as their parent may not have the correct support to deal with their illness and in some cases the older children may take the role as a parent and has to grow up and mature before their time.

A child’s education may suffer as the parent may not allow the child to attend school or they may have to stay at home to look after siblings. Poverty and Social Disadvantage – Growing up in poverty is the UK greatest threat to development. It can affect every area of development. If a parent is living in poverty :-they may not have enough money for food or personal hygiene equipment i. e. tooth paste, cleaning products.

This will cause a child physical development to suffer as they may end up malnourished or may have poor personal hygiene so as well as this affecting physical development it will also affect their social development, If a child has poor personal hygiene this may cause them to be bullied and loose friends so this also affect their emotional development as their confidence and self esteem will drop. If a child is living in poverty that child may go with out clothing or toys again this will affect social and emotional development.A child living in poverty are more likely to live in houses that do not have substantial living space for the amount of people living there. The housing may be poor condition i. e. damp , dirty, no heating or hot water this can cause a child to be ill so may be off school for long periods of time so affecting intellectual development and children living in these conditions may be embarrassed to ask friends to their house so this will again affect the child social and emotional development.

If a child is living in poverty statistically they are more likely to to suffer ill health in later life and also be unemployed and turn to crime and substance abuse this will then cause their children to then suffer and the cycle continues. Health If a child grows up living in poverty then the child’s health may be affected. This could be down to poor or unbalanced diet. If a child has a bad diet then various conditions may occur such as :- Nutritional anaemia this is due in lack of iron folic acid and vitamin B12.Tooth decay caused by lack of dental hygiene and eating to many sugary sweets or drinking to much fizzy drinks.

Obesity is caused by an unbalanced diet and eating to many high in fat foods. Children who are obese are more likely to become obese adults. Children who are in poor health are more prone to infection and illness as their immune system will be low and could be prone to scabies, stomach upsets, and any other child hood illness.Lack of sleep will affect a child’s development.

A child needs sufficient sleep to be able to concentrate and be able to learn. Lack of sleep can also cause emotional, social and behavioural problems, this is because if a child is tired they will not like to participate in activity therefore isolating them selves from making friends. Enviroment If a child is living in a bad environment then their development will be affected. If a child is living in a bad area then pollution may be factor. The three main pollution that are at risk to a childs health are water, air and noise pollution. Air pollution will affect physical development and can cause asthma and also lead poisoning and this can be caused from vehicle exhaust fumes.

Noise pollution can affect emotional and social development.
