In my essay I will relate to the 3 characters that I have chosen from George Orwell's Animal Farm.
The 3 characters that I a have chosen are Napoleon, Squealer and Boxer. These characters are all related to the Russian generals during the communist actions. I will give details and information about the characters to identify them and explain all about them and their actions, then I will find quotations for each character to see how they relate to human beings and Russian generals to see how they relate to different types of human beings and Russian generals from the revolution of 1917.NapoleonNapoleon is a large fierce-looking Berkshire Boar, the only Berkshire on the farm. He has an ongoing reputation for getting his own way because of his fierce nature and short temper.
Napoleon is very much associated with Joseph (the leader of the Soviet Union, backed by the KGB), as he becomes more and more selfish, brutal and dictatorial.Like Stalin, Napoleon is a dictator. Dictators have to start their Political careers somewhere and then they have to rise to power and stay in power, using force if necessary, without care for any individual. Napoleon begins by being a part of the Pig Elite; he then gathers a bond of supporters and does not allow anybody to disagree with him (the 4 young pigs) and he eliminates any powerful rivals such as Snowball. Like Stalin and the KGB, Napoleon trains Jessie and Bluebell's puppies to be brutal agents and slaves of control. Napoleon demonstrates his brutal nature, when he summons the 9 snapping jaws of the huge dogs upon SnowballHis competitive nature with Snowball is paralleled by the rivalry of Stalin and Trotsky; neither agreeing with each other's proposals or ideas.
Napoleon, like Stalin, eventually succeeds as he banishes Snowball with the use of the 9 enormous dogs. The way, in which Stalin became excessively brutal and paranoid, how he executed so many people, and the way he sent many people to labour camps in Siberia is also witnessed in Animal Farm, when Napoleon executes the 4 pigs. Stalin executed people after show trials after they confessed to imaginary crimes, Napoleon also did this. The3 hens stated that Snowball had appeared to them in a dream and told them to disobey Napoleons orders - so they were slaughtered. Many more of these trials took place, leading to the death of several animals.Napoleon is also related to the French emperor who came to power during the French revolution in 1789, he became one of the most feared men in the world (like in Animal farm with the use of the 9 dogs), because of his desire to conquer all of Europe.
In Animal farm, George Orwell suggests that there will always be dictators, unless we learn the lessons that this book is trying to teach.BoxerBoxer is a huge Carthorse, the most powerful animal on the farm. He is a caring animal with some intelligence. He is an enormous beast, as strong as 2 horses put together, tall but has a comical white stripe down the front if his nose. Boxer is respected all around the farm, but mainly for his tremendous powers of work and steady character.
He is 1 of 2 carthorses on the farm, the other being Clover. He is the most important of the other animals, as he is the one who can stand up against anyone or keep the animals going if anything went wrong. He is the 2nd class leader.Boxer represents Stakhanovite from the revolution.
Stakhanovite worked excessively for the good of the nation, but didn't realise he was being exploited. Boxer is single-handedly responsible for keeping Napoleon in power. He shows loyalty and strength on Animal farm, by keeping their spirits up with sayings such as "I will work harder" and "Comrade Napoleon is always right." These maxims were used to encourage every body on the farm.SquealerSquealer is a short fat pig. He has round cheeks, twinkling eyes, nimble movements and a high pitched shrill voice.
He has a way of persuading anybody about anything. When he would argue a point, he would skip from side to side wagging his tail, and this would be somehow persuasive.Snowball, Napoleon and squealer all formed a group called Animalism. Squealer justified and explained any point Napoleon made about the running of the farm.
His job was to brainwash the animals using any method, he would lie, re-write the commandments and tell half-truths.Whatever Squealer said or did was right, no one ever argued with him. He is deceptive, conniving, sly and cunning in a way that he brainwashes their minds into believing everything Napoleon says is right and needs to be done. Squealer represents all the methods of propaganda Stalin used to keep his position of leader of the Soviet Union.
Squealer could argue against anybody and persuade him or her around any point. When squealer explains to the animals about Napoleon and the windmill he says, "Napoleon had never opposed the windmill, the plan on the floor of the incubator was stolen from Napoleon. The windmill was in fact Napoleons own creation. He had opposed it to get rid of Snowball. This was something called Tactics.
" This shows his cunning nature, using words too complicated for the animals and being so persuasive that they just agreed. Squealer was an excellent speaker; Napoleon used him so well to demonstrate his propaganda methods that the animals agreed with ease,From Animal farm we can take that communism and Fascism enforce such a system that certain governments are so powerful that people are silenced and views ignored. This is Totalitarianism. When George Orwell writes a book there is always something that he is trying to get out to the public, in this case it is the lie about Communism.
