Hi I am Lester Walker and I will be explaining to you which Amendment from the Bill of Rights I think is most important in today’s society. Personally I think Amendment 5 is the most important one because it’s still racism going on throughout the United States and in some places they would seriously punish an African American male or female for small crimes just because of the color of their skin. I think it’s unfair because I thought everyone were created equally to the same rights and no person was better than one another. So accusing someone of a capital crime is unlawful and the 5th Amendment put a stop to it. Another good thing about the 5th Amendment is that it stops double jeopardy.
Double jeopardy is being accused for another crime while your prosecuted. It’s also unlawful to do that to someone because in court once the judge has sentenced the criminal he should serve that time and shouldn’t get more time added. Also it helps criminals not be accused for the same crime more than once. That’s a good thing to me because you could do a slightly serious crime like 3rd degree murder twice and you shouldn’t be charged for both offences.
(Funny how you get less time for 3rd degree than 1st degree murder. Lastly I would like to say that the 5th Amendment helps criminals or persons that were accused for a serious crime because a local judge cannot prosecute the person accused, it had to be indicted by a Grand Jury first in order to clarify that the crime is a infamous or capital crime. It also cuts down on accidental prosecutions of innocent persons. And even thought the death penalty is abolished some states and countries still practice it even though I believe they shouldn’t.
In conclusion, I highly believe that the 5th Amendment is the most important to me so far since I’ve done a bit of research on it. And since racism still exist within the United States even though it shouldn’t because, as stated before everyone is created equal and no person is greater than another.
