You are the president of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at an urban school. At the last association meeting, many parents expressed their concern about the poor performance of their children, particularly in Mathematics, science and the English language. They felt that the school should work harder towards improving the teaching and learning of these subject. The PTA could assist but the association does not have enough funds (money) to carry out its projects for the school. ou wish to speak about this problem and suggest some solutions at the forthcoming meeting.

(a)Which of the following speech types will best describe your speech: informative, Persuasive, negotiation, or argumentative speech? Give reason for your answer. Persuasive speech will be the best speech type in this situation, because persuasive speech aims to influence the audiences’ attitude, value or behavior, and convince your audience to take action. In this case, the PTA can conduct a meeting, in purpose of fund raising for the project or conduct the corresponding campaign, so the speech must aim to persuade the audience to help out in this project to raise enough funds to carry out the project. (b)Briefly outline the problem that the PTA needs to address. What actions can the members of the association take? The problems that PTA needs to address are: 1. The poor performance of the students in the subjects of mathematics, science, and the English language.

2. Moreover the association does not have enough funds to carry out its projects for the school. In order to resolve the above problems, the most effective way to improve the performance of subject mathematics, science, and English language is to encourage students to participate in the tuition classes on the above subjects, and participate in the extracurricular activities such as mathematics club, English club, and science club. The PTA could conduct a meeting to deliver the information to audience and persuade the audience to support the proposed solutions.

(c) What form of oral communication will your intended PTA speech be? Briefly escribe the model of communication that clearly explains how your public speech could work most effectively. My intended PTA speech will be in the form of public communication since this form of oral communication is commonly used to inform or persuade the audience to act, buy, or think in a certain way. The PTA propose plan to conduct the tuition classes and extracurricular activities. Therefore, the PTA must encourage and persuade the audience to participate the fundraising activities,so this form of public communication will do the best.

The best communication model for this situation is the Linear Model. The Linear Model views communication as one-way or linear process in which the speaker speaks and the listener listen. Who (said) What in what channel to whom With what effect Laswell’s (1948) model was based on the five question above According the Laswell’s(1948), the five questions are: who(said), what, in what channel, to whom=with what effect? In this speech, the speaker is the president of the PTA, who will tell the audience about the poor performance in the subjects of English language, Science, and Mathematics, as well as the lack of funding to resolve the above issues. In the meeting, the PTA will also propose solutions for the above problems and issue a notice to inform the audience to support the proposed solutions and participate in a series of activities proposed in the meeting (in what channel). The targeted audiences are teachers, parents, and school principals (To whom), and the purpose is to persuade the audiences to support the PTA’s decisions. (d) What is the social context of your speech and who are the participants? Assuming that your audience will be multicultural, analyse its needs so that these can be addressed in the speech.

The targeted participants are teachers and parents.Since the audience will be multicultural, considering the differences in languages, educational and occupational backgrounds, Although English is widely spoken in Malaysia, very often Malaysian English is spoken by the Malaysian. Each ethnic group speak its own brand of English with a particular accent, jargon and intonation(source text book) so the social context of my speech will be in simple English so that the audience can understand. According to our textbook “English for Oral Communication” pg.

126 - Guidelines in Social Communication: Effective communication happens only when you understand and have respect for culture differences. e) Prepare an outline of your speech (see e. g. Topic 8.

4. 4,p. 174)keeping in mind the purpose of your speech(topic 9). Use complete sentences to express your main points and supporting statement in the introduction, body, and conclusion or any other content structure that may be appropriate. E. g.

Good morning ladies and gentleman, my name is James, I am the president of the Parent-Teacher Association(PTA). I would like to welcome everybody to this meeting. Because of the feedbacks from many parents from the previous association meeting about the poor performance of students in Mathematics, Science, and English. Therefore, in the meeting today, we will talk about several solutions to the above concerns. In order to resolve the above problems, the most effective way to improve the performance of subject mathematics, science, and English language is to encourage students to participate in the tuition classes on the above subjects, and participate in the extracurricular activities such as mathematics club, English club, and science club. We could assist but the association does not have enough funds to carry out its projects for the school.

So we plan to have a series of fund raising activities to get funding for the above proposed solutions. We hope all the parents will support the upcoming activities. In the following section, we will continue to talk more about the tuition classes, extracurricular activities, and the fundraising activities. Now.

let’s talk about tuition classes. According to English Oral Communication (http://www. bt. com. bn/en/home_news/2007/12/07/varied_reactions_on_benefits_of_tuition_classes) There are simply too many concepts to learn in subjects like physics and biology, therefore, tuition classes is a great way to review each concept without worrying about holding the more advanced classmates behind.

I feel that my children will benefit more in tuition classes through the extra attention given compared their normal classes where the teacher's attention are divided amongst 20-30 students," he remarked. Echoing this thought, Hj Hamidah, a civil servant, said that by sending her children to tuition classes, she was helping them filling their time with productive after-school activities, instead of just watching television and playing computer games. She explained that tuition classes should not hold more than ten students to ensure that teachers can monitor their students better. This helps us identify each student's weaknesses which we can help improve. " Tuition classes are increasingly becoming an essential part of the education with students from primary schools to higher institutions becoming more dependent on it to improve their performances in competitive examinations. at above we reflection about benefit of tuition classes for the children.

So the tuition classes are most effectively to improve the performance of relevant subject.I will tell you about extracurricular activities, such as mathematics club, English club, and science club. In the English club, we have a series of activities such as: 1. Reading English magazines and books, if students can read two versions of the same magazine (for example, reading Newsweek in native language and in English), this could help students to understand the content much easier. 2. Watching English films with English subtitles.

For students who can't understand a film without subtitles and find themselves not listening at all when reading subtitles. If it is too difficult to watch the whole film this way, try watching the first 10 or 15 minutes of the film with subtitles in a familiar language, switch to English subtitles after that, and only switch back to subtitles in a familiar language if students get totally lost following the story of the film. 3. Reading English children's books.

This is very similar to watching English children's movies, but with the added advantage of there being more illustrations than adult books, which both help students to understand the story and makes the page brighter and more motivating to read. 4. Listening to English music.Even listening to music while doing something else can help a little for things like getting used to the natural rhythm and tone of English speech. More time and attention students give to a song the more students will learn from listening. 5.

Watching English children's films or TV programs. Although some of the vocabulary you can learn from things made for children can be a bit strange (lots of animal names and maybe animal noises, including baby names for things), the fact that not only the language but the structure of the story is simplified can make it an easy and motivating thing to watch.Like good language learning materials, the same language is also often repeated to make it memorable, and the use of catchy songs etc. can increase this positive effect on your memory. 6.

Reading English newspaper. Freebie newspapers like "Metro" in London are usually the easiest to understand, followed by mid-brow titles like "The Daily Express" or "The Daily Mail" in English. Popular newspapers like "The Sun" are more difficult because of the idiomatic, slangy use of language and the number of jokes in the headlines and articles. source: http://www. usingenglish.

om/articles/70-ways-to-improve-your-english. html In the mathematics club, we have a series of activities such as: 1. Play cards and board games. Simple games such as Go Fish and Crazy 8’s are a great way for young children to learn the value of numbers. More advanced games such as cribbage and Monopoly are excellent mental math motivational tools. 2.

Play number guessing games. Here is an example: I am thinking of a number between 1 and 100. It is more than 50. It is an even number. It is the product of 8 times 9. 3.

Use your newspaper to find graphs and statistics.Discuss how to read and interpret a graph, and point out the different kids: line graph, pie chart, bar chart, histogram, etc. 4. Fill a jar with jellybeans and have students estimate how many there are. After their initial estimate, take out 10 and allow them to amend their guess.

When you count the actual number, show students how to count in increments of two. 5. Pretend to shop using an advertisement. Given students 50 “pretend dollars” and have them pick out the things they want to buy and figure out how much money they would have left over. Hint: A toy ad is especially motivating for young children. 6.

Use dice to do mental addition and teach probability. Ask the students, “Am I more likely to roll a 7 or a 12? ” For a challenge, use more than two dice. You can list all of the possible combinations on a piece of paper http://tutoring. sylvanlearning. com/newsletter/1101/10math.

cfm In the science club, we have a series of activities such as, Easy science project Here you can find simple home and school science project ideas and experiments. com/projects. html Above are the extracurricular activities that will help motivate the students to increase interests in the relevant subjects. So we hope that all the parents will support the above proposal. In order to improve the students’ performance in these subjects, we hope that all the parents and teachers will support and participate in the fund raising activities. After that I want to talk about fund raising. In conclusion, in order to improve the students’ performance in the relevant subjects, the PTA have planned to set up the tuition classes and extracurricular activities, but we will need funding to carry out the projects.

Therefore, the PTA has planned a series of fund raising activities such as selling reference and story books, educational games, video and audio CDs, and stationary. The activities will help raise the funds and these items for sale will also help students to increase knowledge and interests of the relevant subjects. That is all that I have for today’s meeting.
