Introductory Activity (5 minutes) Each child has a partner about equal in ability. Under control, one partner runs, dodges, and tries to lose the other, who must stay within 3 feet of the runner. On signal, both stop. Chasers must be able to touch their partners to say they have marked them. Partners then change roles. Introduction (2 minutes) We will be starting our basketball unit today.

Someone name the most important role in basketball in which you score but raise your hand before you answer. Yes Alex, it is shooting. Today we will be learning the proper technique of a good shot.Introduce skill be verbalizing cues and demonstrating (2 minutes) When we shoot good body position is important. Focus on the front of the rim and as the shot starts cock the wrist and be sure to follow through to give the ball correct spin.

Demonstrate this technique. XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX Xx BEEF Shooting Drill #1 ( 6 minutes) Same formation as above. Okay, you all need to partner up facing each other 10 feet away from each other. Everyone on the left side should have a ball. When I say balance you are all going to bend your knees and make sure your feet are shoulder width apart.Next, I will say elbow and your elbow should be at a 90 degree angle and not sticking out.

The ball should be on you r fingertips and never touching your palm. Then I will say eyes, so everyone should have their eyes up and on their target. Last, I will say follow through and everyone should shoot the ball to their partner with a good follow through. Then the partner that received the shot will do the same thing on my command. Layup Shot- Drill #2 (7 minutes) Okay, now we will work on layups. There will be two lines of 12 on each wing and the ball will be on the right wing.

Take two or three dribbles and when you reach the goal jump off your left foot and aim the ball at the top right corner of the square on the backboard. (Demonstrate) The person in the left line will be the rebounder and will pass the ball to the next person in the right line and go to the back of the line and repeat. Now we will switch sides and practice a left handed layup. We must jump off our right foot and aim at the top left corner of the square on the backboard and make sure you use your left hand. (Demonstrate) Jump Shot-Drill #3 (7 minutes)The jump shot drill has most of the same mechanics as the BEEF drill but now we will be jumping straight up and releasing that ball at the height of the jump.

Okay, stay in the same formation as you are on the wings and start on the right side and take two dribbles in and do a jump shot. (demonstrate) Now switch the left side and we will do the same thing. Free Throw Shot- Drill #4 (10 minutes) Okay one of the most important shots in the game is the free throw. It is uncontested so it is very important to make this shot.

Okay every one circle around the lane and one person get to the free throw line and get ready to shoot.Make sure you do the BEEF drill and everyone will have different rituals when they shoot free throws so you find out what is comfortable with practice. Now I will show you how we are going to shoot this today. Remember do not let the ball sit in your palm always keep it on your fingertips. I am going to take two dribbles bend my knees and elbow and shoot. (demonstrate) Everyone will shoot two free throws and the person right after them will have another ball so we can go through this quicker.

Everyone must shoot their two free throws and keep rotating around the lane and do so until I tell you to stop.Concluding Activity (8 minutes) Knockout The playing area is one end of the basketball court. All players line up single file behind the free throw line. There will be only two balls in this game. The first player must shoot the ball and the goal is to make it before the person behind you makes it or you will be knocked out of the game.

Each person cannot shoot until the person in front of them does. If you get knocked out you must stand on the sideline but if you knock someone out or you just made your shot before the person behind you just pass the ball to the front of the line and go to the back of the line. This game continues until there is just one person left that hasn’t been knocked out. It is very fun and also gets some conditioning in without the students noticing because they are having so much fun. Conclusion (2 minutes) You all did a great job today.

Thank you for working hard and cooperating the whole time. Remember the BEEF drill and use it at all times when shooting until it becomes a habit and you do it on your own. Once again, you all did so good and tomorrow we will continue working on shooting. Assessment Shooting checklist completed during drills and game play.
