Theodore Bilbo
governor of Mississippi twice and US senator once. he made his name a synonym for white supremacy. Proud of being a racist, Bilbo believed that black people were inferior, defended segregation, and was a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
NAACP
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, founded in 1909 to abolish segregation and discrimination, to oppose racism and to gain civil rights for African Americans, got Supreme Court to declare grandfather clause unconstitutional
Ray Charles
Known as the "Genius of Soul"; songwriter, arranger, keyboard player, and vocalist fluent in R, jazz, and mainstream pop. Migrated from South to North.
Robert Pershing Foster was his doctor. Ray Charles named his son Robert after the Doctor who sewed his arm back together and delivered his son.

Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a fourteen year old boy that was from Chicago visiting his family in Mississippi. He was murdered for whistling at a white woman.
Not knowing how severe Mississippi's segregation was compared to Chicago, Emmett did not think anything would come of his actions. Emmett Till was brutally murdered by some white men that heard about his behavior towards the white woman.
Martin Luther King Jr.
1950s; civil rights leader advocated non-violence and civil disobedience as tools for change; organized protests such as the March on Washington, as well as indirectly inspired sit-ins and protests across the nation. Assassinated in 1968.
Brown Vs. Board of Education
1954- court decision that declared state laws segregating schools to be unconstitutional. Overturned Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
The Civil Rights Act
Signed in 1964 by LBJ; prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, or religion.
