A number by which another number is divided.

commutative property

a+b=b+a; when you change the order in which you multiply or add, the answer remains the same

associative property

(a+b)+c=a+(b+c); when you change groupings using parenthesis and the answer remains the same

distributive property

a(b+c)=a(b)+a(c); when multiplying term outside parenthesis to terms inside parenthesis

additive identity

b+0=b; when adding 0 to a number the number stays the same

multiplicative identity

c*1=c; when multiplying 1 to a number the number stays the same

fact family

A group of 3 numbers that are related by addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.

equation

A statement that 2 quantities are equal.

origin

The 0 point on of a number line

perfect square

The product of mulitplying a number by itself.

Expanded notation

Writing a number by writing each nonzero digit times its place value. Ex. (2 x 100) + (3 x 1) = 203
