•Smitty was very helpful to Ned in many different battles throughout the story. His job in the Marines was to make sure nobody thought Ned was Japanese, which could have happened because of Ned's Navajo skin tone.
Johnny helped recruit more Navajos to join the Marines to be code talkers.•Ned meets another Navajo Code Talker in battle named Wilsie. Wilsie came from a similar background as Ned did living with his family on a reservation. Wilsie and Ned work together sending and receiving coded messages often.
Ned lives peacefully with his family.•Ned is sent to Rehoboth Mission school at only six years old. His uncle wants him to go there to learn how to read, write, and speak English. •Ned trains for the marines at Camp Elliott.
This is where Ned and other Marine recruits learn to be physically and mentally strong as a Marine would need to be.

•Mission school is very challenging for Ned. This makes him think even worse about the white men culture. Ned learns English here and realizes that he is very good student.•After being recruited as a Marine, Ned goes to Camp Elliott to train for his future as a Marine. Ned realizes that Navajos are often better physically than white people. This significantly boosts his confidence.
He is disgraced by the amount casualties and people wounded in battle. He learns war is a very bad thing for everyone.
The pictures are of a Marine division with code talkers, A mission school for Navajos like the one Ned attended, and the medals many Navajo code talkers received after war for the courage, bravery, and their value to the U.S. in war. One of the most important parts of the story was the climax when war ended after the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
. The Japanese did many banzai attacks in this battle. Banzai attacks were when large groups of Japanese soldiers all charged at once and didn't stop for anything. This was believed to be very honorable in Japanese culture if soldiers died in these attacks
The Japanese also used many kamikaze, or suicide attacks.• The next battle on the island of Iwo Jima may have been the toughest of them all. The Japanese didn't attack the invading U.S.
marines until they started climbing the most important mountain on the island called Suribachi. After a long battle, the U.S. finally took control of the island.•The final battle of Ned's marine career was Okinawa. This battle was fought right before the U.
S. dropped the atomic bombs on Japan.
