charlotte doyle – summary of characters

she is a young 13 year-old girl who comes from a rich family. At the beginning of the story she is way too obedient and seems very fragile. Her characteristics change through the story. At the end she is a totally different person. She isn't fragile or scared or acting way too obedient like in the beginning of the story. Charlotte is a main character because the story revolves around her. A quote that reflects her "I come, I managed to say, to join the crew." This quote is on page 106. This shows how Charlotte starts to change and how she is trying to right Zachariah's death. Round, dynamic, protagonist

He is a nice older African American sailor, who is part of the crew. He is the Seahawk's cook and only black man. He is about 50 years old and cannott read and knows very little about Christianity. He is extremely nice to Charlotte and then they become friends. Zachariah is a main character because he is Charlotte's best friend on the ship and is very important to the storyline. A quote that reflects him is " Miss Doyle doesn't know what might happen, he urged." This quote is on page 23 and it's right when Zachariah gives Charlotte the dirk. This shows that he cares about her and wants to protect her.

He was Captain Jaggery's first mate. He would arrive whenever needed and would complete the task the captain ordered with little hesitation. We chose Hollybrass as an important secondary character because his killing caused a huge dilemma for Charlotte Doyle when she was charged for his murder. Hollybrass is a secondary character. He gets murdered during the hurricane with a knife to his back. Charlotte is accused of the crime, tried for it, and found guilty.

He was part of the crew and was very kind to Charlotte. We chose Ewing as an important secondary character because he was the reason Charlotte figured out about the uprising against the captain. Charlotte found the round robin when getting a needle for Ewing in his trunk. If Ewing would've went in her place, the round robin would have never been found. Scottish and has a mermaid tattoo.

He was also part of the crew, and was obedient at following the captain's orders. We chose Fisk as an important secondary character because he was willing to allow Charlotte to beg forgiveness to the rest of the crew, even if he thought the idea was useless. He was still mad at Charlotte, but willing to give her the slightest chance to make things better. We chose him as a secondary character because he was a character who made an impact in the story by helping Charlotte, but wasn't as talked about later.

He was a part of the crew (2nd mate). He was very loyal to Captain Jaggery but also helped the crew. We chose Keetch because he changed the story. He fed Zachariah when he was hiding in the brig. He also told Captain Jaggery about him hiding though. He ruined Charlotte's plan of trying to get the key. We chose him because he changed the story in good and bad ways.

He was a part of the crew. We chose him as a secondary character because he helped Charlotte become a part of the crew. He taught her the things necessary for her to be a part of the crew. He was accepting of Charlotte. This is why we chose him as a secondary character.

As one of the crew members, he played a role in Charlotte's trial by voting for her to be hanged. We chose him as a supporting character because he didn't play a major role in the plot.

He is one of the people on the crew. Morgan was-like the other crew members-part of Charlotte's trial. Morgan didn't play a major role in the plot, so we dub him a supporting character.

He is one of the many crew members. He showed Charlotte to her luggage and told her about the Brig. He is a supporting character because he didn't play a major role in the plot, even if he was in more scenes than the other crewmates. He warns Charlotte not to take the voyage to America aboard the Seahaw

He is yet another crew member and did not play a large role like some of the other sailors on board The Seahawk.

He is Charlotte's brother and did not affect the story in the least

She is Charlotte's sister, but is a supporting character because she did not affect the plot.

He was not in the story all that much, but he was the owner of The Seahawk. Once Charlotte returned home he refused to believe Charlotte's stories about her journey, and he even burned her journal. He is a man of rules and orders who thinks punctuation and spelling are very important things. He gave her the blank journal.

She was only mentioned once Charlotte returned home, which is why she is a supporting character. She is very proper and was dismayed by her daughter's short hair, rough hands, and torn clothing. She says Charlotte your skin is brown

She is the Doyle family's maid. She would not accept Charlotte's plea for friendship and insisted on calling Charlotte "Miss Doyle," no matter how many times Charlotte begged her not to. She did however bring Charlotte newspapers in exchange for small treasures and trinkets. Her properness influenced Charlotte's decision to leave home for life on the sea. Bridget's part in the story was small though, which is why she is only a supporting character.

She was another one of the Doyle's maids, but she didn't play a huge role in the story.

He was Charlotte's chaperone or guardian in the very beginning of the story. He is very proper and is a no-nonsense kind of man. He is a bit pushy and insists that charlotte make the voyage. He is a supporting character because he didn't play a huge part in the plot of the story.

Charlotte Doyle gets on the Seahawk characters are introduced

Charlotte is the only girl on the ship. She meets Zachariah.

The crew starts a mutiny. The captain stops it. He shoots Cranick and sentences Zachariah to fifty lashes. Charlotte thinks Zachariah dies so she decides to join the crew. She joins the crew. They sail into a hurricane. Mr. Hollybrass is killed. Charlotte finds Zachariah.

Charlotte gets charged for murder.

Charlotte has her trial and is charged for murder. Zachariah tries to overthrow the captain again by stealing the key to the cabinet where Jaggery keeps the muskets. The captain catches her and gives her three options, she get get hanged, take the key, or put her clothes back on and beg for his mercy. She doesn't choose any option so he goes out after her, falsely accuses her, and chase her. Then he falls off the ship and dies. Charlotte is appointed captain and she gets home.

She runs away from home and gets back on the Sea-hawk.
