Prose
Writing that is similar to everyday speech and language, the ordinary form of writing. Its form is based on sentences and paragraphs.
Narrator
A person who tells a story.
Novel

Fiction

Internal Conflict
A struggle with emotions; such as jealousy, fear, or anxiety.
Setting
When/where a story takes place.
Protagonist
The main character in the story.
Imagery
Language that appeals to the senses and helps the reader see, hear, smell, tastes, and feel the scenes in a story.
Indirect Characterization
The writer reveals a character's personality through the character's words and actions and through what other character's think and say about the character.
Antagonist
A person or force that opposes the main character.
External Conflict
A struggle with an outside force.
Limited Third Person Point Of View
The reader learns the thoughts of only one character, "he" or "she" is used throughout the piece.
Omniscient Point Of View
The narrator reveals the thoughts of several characters throughout the piece.
First Person Point Of View
The reader sees everything through one character's eyes. "I" is used throughout the piece.
Plot
A series of related events in a story or novel. Events develop around one or more conflicts.
Exposition
Early plot stages provide the reader with background information, character, setting, and situation are introduced.
Rising Action
The part of the plot that adds complication to the conflict of the story and increases the reader's interest.
Climax
The point of the greatest emotional intensity, interest, or suspense... comes at the turning point of the story.
Falling Action
Action that follows the climax.
Resolution
Part of a plot that reveals or suggests the outcome of the conflict.
