Recently, Cafe Punta de Cielo which is located in the campus of Universidad de las Americas Puebla in Mexico has started to accept bitcoin as a payment method.At the moment, there are about 8,000 students enrolled in the university and allowing bitcoin as a payment method is a way for the young crowd to have the opportunity to learn and use digital currency.Universidad de las Americas Puebla is the first Mexican university to accept bitcoin.
Pompeu Fabra University of Spain and Massachusetts Institute of Technology of US are also in the list of the colleges that accept bitcoin as a payment method in school stores and host bitcoin ATMs.A bitcoin exchange provider with a Latin American focused, Bitso is administrating the bitcoin processing integration.Recently Bitso has closed a seed funding round which is led by Barry Silbert- backed investment fund Bitcoin Opportunity Corp and also includes other undisclosed angel investors.According to Silbert, Bitso has the great asset and can help to facilitate remittances to and from Mexico, he stated,“Bitso is well- positioned to emerge as the region’s leader in bitcoin exchange and payments, and we are thrilled to partner with them to help build a big, important company in this emerging industry.”According to the estimates of World Bank, about more than $483 billion was sent internationally through official remittance channels with the bulk of that - $351 billion – going to developing and emerging countries that includes India, Mexico and Philippines.Remittances are critical for Mexico and most of the Latin American countries, with Mexico being the largest remittances corridor in the world.Bitso, launched in April of 2014, is the first Mexican bitcoin exchange that facilitates the use of bitcoin as a mechanism for substantially improving efficiency of this vast economic flow by significantly decreasing the costs and increasing the speed of transactions.The Vice President of payments of Bitso, Jose Rodriguez stated, “We expect this successful BitsoPagos integration to create the traction for more Punta de Cielo and many other merchants to adopt Bitcoin.”Cafe Punta de Cielo was found in 2004 and this coffee shop chain specializes in the sales and distribution of coffee which is produced in Mexico.Cafe Punta de Cielo has operated in more than 100 franchises across Mexico along with other countries that include Spain, Hong Kong and the U.S.
