The Wave of Technology The world of today from a technological standpoint has been making advances almost daily and if current progress is any indication will continue to do so for a long time to come. Every day we as individuals are helped along in our every day affairs by technology. Most of us would be completely lost without our current level of technology.

Since the beginning of recorded history, mankind has always searched for ways to make life easier and to lessen the burden of everyday tasks. Early technology amounted to the development of tools and implements and primitive machines that allowed early man to accomplish more in the least amount of time. Some of the early inventions are still used today with only minor modifications to make them more applicable in the modern world. Even with all of the past and present achievements, mankind is still pushing forward with new ideas and greater efforts to accomplish what twenty years ago would have seemed like only fantasy.

Today we have become so technologically dependant that life would become unbearable to most if we had to do without any of our present conveniences or comforts all of which are based on technology. In almost everything we do technology is involved. Our food is prepared and packaged mostly by machines, the clothing that we wear is processed by machines, the building materials for our homes are manufactured by machines and our very health is monitored and regulated at times by machines. We travel from one point on the globe to another using machines and sophisticated technology to guide us to the proper place.

It is almost inevitable 2 that we are becoming dependent on our technology almost faster than we can invent it. This in itself some see as a drawback to technological advance. Others see this as an opportunity to profit from technology and as a reason to pursue more advances as rapidly as possible. Others use the technological wave as a means to try out new ideas, theories and inventions.

Enter into any home in America or any developed country and you are ninety percent likely to see a home computer that is used for finance, records keeping, historical and family information and to surf the ever growing pathways of the internet for information, education, entertainment or to shop for almost anything. This is all possible due to mankind s push to better himself and to make it easier to perform daily tasks. More Americans own home computers and have internet access than any other country in the world and the number of Americans that are getting on this wave of the future is increasing daily. Technological advances in the areas of Medicine have increased the quality of life for our elderly and have helped to find new ways to fight disease and illness. Because of these advances, the average lifespan in America has increased by sixty percent in the last hundred years alone; more people are reaching the age of ninety and above than ever before.

New technology allows researchers to study the very genetic codes of human DNA and identify ways to decrease genetic defects and increase new methods of genetically fighting some of the worst 3 diseases. It is now even possible to clone life, something that was unheard of and not imagined possible one hundred years ago. Overall, the increasing technology in the world of medicine will help to benefit all mankind now and in the future. Technological advances in science have helped all areas of everyday life for mankind, but no other area of interest has benefited as much as the need to explore the world around us or as we look outward to the stars and wonder if we truly are alone in the universe.

Technology has allowed us to discover more and more about the universe around us to include our own planet and harness better ways of creating energy, food and safe environments. The need to explore and answer the unknown have always been a driving force in human nature and with the help of technology the future may indeed open new worlds and experiences to the catalog of mankind. Technology has been called a two-edged sword by many critics who do not like change or have no ambition, but technology is coupled to mankind s need for knowledge in all things which is a sure sign that no matter how far we think we have come in the technological world or how far we are able to go, someone somewhere will always be thinking of new and better ways to accomplish the ambitions of mankind and increase the total knowledge that is available. The wave of technology is increasing in size and complexity each day and is taking mankind with it, for better or for worse, you decide!
