The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sobbed. Today we are ping to examine her novel with particular emphasis on her purpose in writing a novel such as this and we will also look at how she conveyed her intentions. This is interesting undertaking when you consider the way she delivers the story. There s plenty of material to get through so if you will all ensure that your mobile phones ere turned off, I will begin. The Lovely Bones originates from a personal experience. This novel is based on a onus girl who is brutally raped and murdered, leaving her family and friends to arrive over their terrible loss.
Sobbed explores the enormity of loss, grief and the afterlife. These themes are delivered through a unique structure, point of view and :he use of symbolism. The structure that Sobbed uses is very effective and different. Sobbed begins the novel with an epigraph, which shows the relationship between Susie and her father, ace. In the epigraph, Susie describes a snow globe hat sat on her father's desk when was a child.A penguin was in the snow globe, and as a child, Susie was unconcerned that the penguin was lonely but Jack told her not to worry and reassured nerd that the penguin has a nice life because he is trapped in a perfect world.
The ? Emphasis is on 'don't worry and trapped', 'don't worry is intended to mean that after terrible event, there will be recovery; trapped' suggests that life may not exactly -turn to normal. Sobbed has provided a metaphorical example of what her novel is let to become and also showed us the strong bond between Susie and Jack.Sobbed :alls the final chapter Bones, during this chapter she focuses on the healing process 'f the family. Susie has finally entered heaven and everyone has accepted Issue's sheath, including Susie herself.
During this chapter, Sobbed highlights how much В±everyone in the family has grown. The view of which the story is told is also very unique as the victim, Susie Salmon, ells it. Susie provides a first person account of her rape and murder but the story moves quickly into her life in heaven.Issue's 'pre-heaven' is a massive part of the ;Tory and relates back to the snow globe, with her as the penguin, trapped in a perfect world'. This is where she watches her family and friends deal with her death, Nihilist she accepts her death herself.
In Issue's pre-heaven, she accepts that she was murdered and raped, and that she will never grow up. The scenes set in Issue's pre- -leaven show important themes such as the afterlife and grief. Another way that Sobbed expresses themes is through symbolism.During the В±epigraph, Sobbed uses the snow globe to symbolize Issue's unfortunate fate, and Issue's relationship with her father.
Sobbed also uses the ships to represent Susie and Jacks relationship. Susie was the only child who was interested in the ships and meeting only her and her father did together. When the ships were smashed, it ;wowed that the relationship between Susie and her father was broken. Another -legislations shown through symbolism is Issue's and Abigail', her mother.Abigail made Susie a hat, which at the time represented her mother's care and love.
The -apish, George Harvey later uses it to gag Susie whilst raping her. The hat then 'comes a symbol AT nerd loss AT Dreamt. Later on In ten novel, Len Foeman Tints ten at and shows it to Issue's parent's, where it then becomes a symbol that tremendous arm has come to Susie. Now to deal with the themes...
The themes throughout this novel are consistent. Ere major themes I would like to deal with are loss, grief and the afterlife. These :hems are conveyed in many ways and the author uses various techniques to ? Emphasize them. Loss is shown by the tragic death of Susie Salmon. The loss of Susie s made clear from the very start, where Susie starts by telling us the date of her murder.
Although the family does not digest Issue's death well, they all know what :hey have lost. Issue's death marks the loss of all, the breaking of the ships marks the ss for Jack, and the affair with Len marks the loss for Abigail, and so forth.Grief 'lays a huge role throughout the novel, and each main character deals with it in their way. The Salmon's, including Susie, must grieve and overcome their loss, which :hey all manage to do by the end of the novel. The final theme I'd like to discuss is the afterlife. Now the afterlife is where Susie spends most of her time and where she accepts her death.
The afterlife is reassurance from the author showing that there is fife after death; that everything is going to be okay in the end. Thank you all for listening.
