The Impact of new technologies on the operations of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Motorized Patrol Division This research proposes to examine the impact of new technologies on the operations of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Motorized Patrol Division 3. 1 Research Design Research will be gathered using both a qualitative and a quantitative approach; more specifically a questionnaire will be administered as a part of the quantitative approach; Interviews and observations with be taken as a part of the qualitative approach.
Officers stationed In JEFF Mobile Operation Dolls would be the mall persons to be Interviews.Observations of this police operation will be done on a dally basis. The researchers believe this combined approach will yield the most reliable information. 3. 2 Population & Sample The population for this study comprises offers of the JEFF Mobile Operations stationed in Area 5 (Kingston, SST. Andrew and section of SST.
Thomas) These officers operate from the Traffic Division Headquarters located on Ellison Road and other police station including Half Way Tree, Cross Road, Mordant Bay etc. There are approximately 200 officers stationed In the Area 5 Traffic Division. The desired sample size Is 25% of the population or 50 officers.Officers on both the day and night shifts will be sampled. To ensure a representative sample, a proportional random sampling technique will be utilized where 25% of officers from each section of the Area 5 Division will be selected: random observation will be requested of the police personnel on frontline duties.
50 questionnaires will be administered while 20 on duty officers will be observed. 3. 3 Instruments 3. 3. 1 Questionnaire Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire (shown in Appendix 1).
The questionnaire will seek to address the research questions as well as collect demographic Information from the participants.The questionnaires will consist of both open and close ended questions. The researchers will observe the operation of 10 police officers from the JEFF Mobile Operation Division as they conduct their daily duties, taking note of the following: Number of tickets written per day Number of Motorist Stopped Frequency of Motorist data verification 3. 4 Data Collection Procedure Data will be collected over a 2 week period across the Area 5 Division.
Prior to this, a letter seeking permission will be sent to the leadership of the Area 5 Traffic Unit seeking their permission to conduct research on their premises.A copy of this letter is shown in appendix 2. Officers will be approached and asked to participate in the study, upon agreement, the questionnaire will be administered. Over this two period officers on the day and night shift will be observed. 3.
5 Ethical Consideration This can be defined as the ethical principles that are used when tackling a particular issue. For this research the ethical consideration can be 3. 5. 1 Inform consent Participates in the research will be informed of the quality of the research to be conducted. They will grant a choice to participate if they chose to.
In order not to effect the outcome of the study, careful consideration with be determined on how informed participants should be. 3. 5. 2 Confidentially Confidentiality will be upheld as participants are not required to give names or any information that could identify individuals. However, if a need for confidential information arises, participant's rights will be regarded and information will be kept with the strictest confidentiality.
3. 5. 3 Protection for harm Participants of this research are not involved psychologically or physically, therefore, they are not exposed to any psychological or physical harm. 6.
4 Professional Honesty The research team will not attempt to fabricate any data or mislead any one with regards to nature of the findings. 11 Limitations There will be limitations with regard to times needed for a complete observation of the procedure taken by the police officers. They may not have the time to fill out the questionnaires. The time for this research to be completed is limited to four months hence the qualitative and quantitative study may be completed satisfactorily.
