“Solar Bottled Light Bulb” An Investigatory Project In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements in Chemistry February 20, 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, this research or study would not have been possible without the help and support of many people. The group would like to extend its utmost gratitude to Mrs. Jocelyn Pama, the subject teacher who abundantly helped and offered invaluable assistance, support and guidance to this project. Same thing goes to the High School Science Laboratory for providing the laboratory facilities.Thank you for the working scholars who profusely takes time to give service during our experiments and activities held at the laboratory. Deepest gratitude is also due to the members of the group.

Without the cooperation and support of one another, this project would not be a success. Thank you for sharing your time and effort, especially for sharing the ideas, literature and invaluable assistance. Finally, an honorable mention goes to the parents and families for their great understanding and support to the project. Without the help of everyone mentioned, the group would have face difficulties in doing the project. To those people that weren’t mentioned but really helped a lot in completing this project, our dearest gratitude to you all.

ABSTRACT Solar bottled light bulb is eco-friendly; it uses solar energy to light the household out there living in the dark without electricity. It is inexpensive for it is made from recyclable materials. Solar bottled light bulb is easy to assemble and the procedure use, in an empty clear container of soda, add at least 1. 5 liter mineral water and 2tblespoon of liquid bleach, with that it will be covered half of roof sheet and exposed to sunlight.

The bottle is inserted halfway through a hole drilled in the metal roof and its sides are sealed. The whole deal looks like a bulb through a sunroof and provides a good amount of light by deflecting sunlight into gloomy interiors. The solar bottled light bulb is expected to last up to 2 years before it needs changing. The Solar Bottled Light Bulb was successfully made by the group.

There were two experimental test that were made, light bulb A containing 2 cups (1. 5 soda cup size) of liquid bleach and light bulb B containing 5 cups (1. 5 soda cup size) of liquid bleach. Both light bulbs were able to exhibit the expected result, to produce light after being exposed to sunlight.

Light bulb B produced more light compared to light bulb A. The researchers therefore conclude that both of the Solid Bottled Light Bulb containing two (2) soda’s cup size and five (5) soda’s cup size of liquid bleach produces light. But due to the difference of amount of bleach used in each bottle, we can conclude that the more the bleach, the brighter light is produced. Bibliography--------------------------------------------------------------------------7 INTRODUCTION It was an ingenious invention by an engineer in Brazil. It is called “bottle bulb” because it is made of an empty 1. 5 liter soda bottle and in it is a liquid bleach and purified water that can be used as an alternative electric powered light bulb. However, it is only useful during daytime but its luminance was tested and shown to produce as much light as a 50W incandescent bulb.

The communities who benefit from this idea live in areas where the houses hardly have windows and live in darkness even during daytime. Their solution up until this innovation was to turn on the light bulb and use electricity. Poverty is one of the main problems in the Philippines followed by the effect of climate change. All of our daily expenses are increasing, from the price of the food, water, petroleum and even electricity. For the most people, they may think that there’s no solution for this, but there’s actually. Going green and being eco-friendly is one of the ways that we can all do to save energy, as well as money.

The group conducted this study entitled; “Solar Bottled Light Bulb” for it is a way to help to provide light in homes using solar energy and the most interesting part of this alternative light is that it can light up like a 55 watts commercial light bulb. The group generally aims to come up with a light bulb with the use of solar energy and with the use of liquid bleach.Specifically, the group would like to find out if the amount of liquid bleach used will affect the brightness of light being produced between the experimental variables named light bulb A and B. Furthermore the group also aims to figure out if the finished product would work properly and efficiently just like a commercialized 55 W light bulb. The researchers hypothesized that there is no possibility that a light bulb will be able to produce light with the use of solar energy and liquid bleach.

This study aims to provide an eco-friendly sustainable light source for households in the Philippines. This only covers the reactivity of bleach and the components of water. The bleach is highly oxidized chemicals and together when mixed with water forms a layered clear like crystals characteristics that enable the light to trap on its full surfaces, which light forms dramatically. Methodology Materials: • (2) two empty 1. 5 liter soda bottles • liquid bleach or chlorine • rubber sealant • masking tape or packing tape • wooden mini house or cube • plywood • nails • saw PROCEDURE FOR SOLAR BOTTLED LIGHT BULB WITH TWO (2) SODA’S CUP SIZE OF LIQUID BLEACH 1. An empty 1.

liter soda bottle was filled with purified water then (2) soda’s cup size of liquid bleach was added and the bottle was tightly sealed. Note: A TAP WATER was not used because this will allow the growth of moss. 2. A hole was made in the 1’x1’ roof sheet material, just same size of the bottle’s circumference and was inserted at the bottom part of the bottle leaving it exposed under the sunlight. 3.

Another hole on the roof of the mini house or cube (same as the bottle’s circumference) where the Solar Bottled Light Bulb was placed. PROCEDURE FOR SOLAR BOTTLED LIGHT BULB WITH FIVE (5) SODA’S CUP SIZE OF LIQUID BLEACH . An empty 1. 5 liter soda bottle was filled with purified water then (5) soda’s cup size of liquid bleach was added and the bottle was tightly sealed. 5 bottle of a clear container of soda, add at least minimum of 1 to 1. 5 liter of water and 3 tablespoons of liquid bleach, with that, it will be covered half and exposed to sunlight. The reactivity of bleach and the components of water are able to trap the light components or the light itself coming from the sun.The bleach are highly oxidized chemicals and when together when mixed with water forms a layered clear-like crystal characteristic that enables light to trap on its full surfaces.

With that light forms dramatically. In our study, there was a few delimitations’ to consider and one of which is the weather condition, that factor can cause an expected alteration in our study. Conclusion The researchers therefore conclude that both of the Solid Bottled Light Bulb containing two (2) soda’s cup size and five (5) soda’s cup size of liquid bleach produces light. But due to the difference of amount of bleach used in each bottle, we can conclude that the more the bleach, the brighter light is produced.

RECOMMENDATIONS The researchers would like to recommend to groups who would like to investigate and conduct further studies to the topic which is to make a Solar Bottled Light Bulb, to not only limit themselves in using two different amounts of liquid bleach, but to expand the project by using more variety of liquid bleach used.Aside from this, the group also suggests to used many kinds or brands of liquid bleach to know if this will affect the light being produced. One more thing is, the researchers suggest that it would be more effective if this study will be conducted earlier or to know first which months will be sunny to avoid wasting time waiting especially when it rains all the time.
