According to the article "Interior Design History", "Nobody really knows for sure how the history of interior design first begin though you can easily imagine that the rich and wealthy right through the annals of history has always wanted their homes well decorated and oiled with exotic furniture" (1 In other words the origin of interior design still remains uncertain because going back in time before Jesus Christ, fortunate people always like their houses embellished with beautiful ornaments.
Also, researches show that the history of interior design goes way back to the roman time, Italian Renaissance and the Industrial revolution ("Interior Design" 1 Although they are somehow different, Interior design and staging are both about decorating a space. Starting with staging, Wellspring quotes, "Home staging Is about Illusion....
It's all about dressing the house for sale" (1). This quote means all homeowners or Interior designer in need sell their house makeover their house by decorating it, adding and removing some items to make it desirable to buyers. The purpose of interior design is to make a house look larger, brighter and lovely; staging a house also gives home buyers the desire to buy it (Wintriness 1). The price for staging a house varies. Wintriness comments, "Fees range from $500 to $5,000 or more depending on square footage and the number of room staged" (1).
The cost for home staging may cost less or more depending on the size of the house or the umber of room. The money supply for staging may come from bank loans, savings, family, or Issued stocks (Ball 89). Next, Ball writes, "Interior designers plan and provide for the Inside of buildings in order to make them as functional, beautiful, and meaningful as possible" (1). The principal task of an Interior designer Is to design and plan how to occupy the space to make fit with the mood of the client. Interior design improves health: it raises a profile and boosts a business staff ("What Is an Interior Design" 1).
Three types of interior design are ergonomic design in which the designer arks on the space design and furniture design, Elder design which concern is to make a place comfortable to people with disabilities and environmental design taking care of construction material selection and furniture selection ("Interior Designers" 2). To be successful, the designer must have the following characteristics: be creative, artistic, organized, skilled business and use his imagination ("What Is an Interior Designer"l).Meeting the artistic requirements involves planning the place, visualizing, knowing the material and product, and they also furnish spaces. The interpersonal communication call for the designer to meet and deal well with people, be a leader and a team player, Pay attention, and be a good negotiator ("What Is an Interior Designer"2). Matthew states, "They should have artistic and creative talent, as well as good business sense and the ability to solve problems" (4). A good interior has to have some knowledge in business and know how to solve a problem.
A designer must also establish a time strategy. This means that he must have a perfect time and management abilities; He must understand business planning , sell his ideas, be persuasive and maintain good relationships with the client ( "What Is an Interior Designer" 2). Interior design involves six types of designer. First, there is the interior designer who plans and furnishes the space. Second, there is the architect who takes care of the interior schemes, building projects and the surface design ("Who Does Interior Design" 1).The third type of interior design is the interior architect; his level is between the interior designer and the architect; he also plans the space.
In addition, we have the interior stylish. He dresses the space and Socrates it, and he also does surface design. ("Who Does Interior Design? " 1). Then we have a fit-out company that takes care of the architect and interior design concepts. A home owner Just decorates a space with his personality and his taste; that would be a stager ("Who Does Interior Design? " 2).
The process of designing includes many steps.First, the designer must win a project, and this can be done by pitching for a Job, competition, or a Job recommendation ("Interior Design Process" 1). After he wins the project the designer starts programming; this involves meeting the linens, taking notes of the client's preferences, visiting the place and predicts the installment and set up a budget (" Interior designers" 1). When programming is over, the designer develops a project timeline; he predicts the installation and tries to get the work done on time ("Interior Design" 2).After, the designer does some sketches and technical drawing; at the end, he makes some adjustments and presents it to the client ("Interior Design Process" 2). Sometime the designer uses a computer-aided design software to do sketches ("Interior Designers" 1).
The designer has to very pacific on the material and furnishings he will use ("Interior Designer" 2). The designer might sometime need special aid on structural work like an architect; the architect takes care of the patterns and the objects placement (Matthew 1). A technical help may also be needed like a contractor ("Interior Designers" 2).A professional interior designer must have an education and some training to be successful. In contrast, Ball quotes, "Profession differs from a vocation by requiring education and an ethical standard for operation" (83).
The difference between a profession and a vocation is that a profession requires more education. With a bachelor degree, a person can acquire an entry-level position and be an apprentice designer. If the person wants to progress, he can apply for two to four more years then graduates to be an assistant to interior designers ("Interior designers" 3). In order to be employed, a designer must have a license. The designer will to take the state examination and pass it to qualify (Ball 128).
The designer must have at least six years of experience and education in an addition of two years of post-secondary education to be eligible for a license ("Interior design" 3). After, the designer applies o a school placement office; he must present his resume and get ready for an interview (Ball 71). Moreover, the designer must establish a contract. Ball comments, "A contract is a legal agreement between producer and the receiver, and it generally applies whether in a written or verbal form" (93).A contract is a verbal or written covenant between two people. In the interior design industry, there are three types quotes, "Both client and designer are part of the big industrial-business complex that is the world today' (95).
The client and the designer are both needed to make an industry to grow successfully, and they are needed in contract. A contract can also be made between a designer and the supplier (Ball 83). With one to three years of training a designer has the opportunity of becoming a chief designer or teach in interior design schools ("Interior designers" 4).The person may also choose to go further in his career by specializing in areas such as health facilities, acoustics, home theaters, indoor gardens, electronics or security ("Interior designers" 2).
Researches show that thirty percent of designers specialize in design services, fourteen percent peculiar in architectural design services and nine percent in furniture and home furnishing stores ("Interior design" 4). Most interior designers are successful because of their reputation, experience and their specialty ("interior designers" 5).Licensed designers may work in different firms such as large corporation; in this firm, they work on regular hours in a good setting place; they may also work in small design firms in which they work on contract and Job basis ("Interior Designers" 2). Interior designers can also work in interior design firms; those firms have large industries, detail store and business owners (Matthew 1), or the can be self-employed which means they work for long hour in a small environment and under pressure ( "Interior Design" 2).
Designers have variation if working place. Some work in office, showrooms, and some work the client's house or in design center ("Interior Design" 2). Their salaries range from $500 to $5,000 per project, but it also varies on the local demand (Weinstein 2). Holder says, "It depends on whether you are working for a design firm or by yourself, but I'd say the average income of an interior designer is around Less if you are Just starting out" (Interview). Every industry needs professional organizations based on their interests.
Ball says, "A professional organization is a group of professional people who have banded together primarily because they have mutual occupation interest" (178).This quote means that a professional organization is a group of people having the same interest that agree to bound and work together. Companies create organizations so they can improve their common image and establish a long profession. These organizations allow companies to have relationships with other organizations and be social good distributors (Ball 118). The international interior design is based on the organization's profession; the influence of profession in America (Ball 129). T is also based on the educational exchange of ideas, instructions, faculty and mostly the exchange of students (Ball 133).
In contrast, the United States and other countries face a difference. Ball comments, "the reason for any such difference may derive from the fact that interior design work in the united states has been forced to face question of designing for the business world and thus of effecting some solution to contract design" (130). The United States differs from other countries because face and solve efferent question regarding interior design. The first organization was founded in 1931.
It was called the Lad (American Institute of Interior Design), but it prompted during the great depression (Ball 119). The next nearly one is the SAID (American Society of Interior Designers), founded in 1975. It consolidated the Lad organization, and it was opened to all qualified designers (Ball 126). The largest organization is the Amanda Holder; she is an interior designer for four years but had an education in architecture. Holder says, "l chose this career because it allows me to be creative and ark with people" (Interview). Mrs.
.Holder went to Georgia Tech and received a degree in Architectural Design. She has about a year and half of work experience in the architecture field; some of which was focused on interior design. She started her own company in interior design and staging less than a year ago.
The process of design Mrs.. Holder learned in college was essential to preparing her for her career. Although it was not necessarily focused on interior design, the methods are the same whether the person is designing a house, a chair, or a stapler (Holder, Interview). She says, "My greatest strength is my ability to see potential. As an architectural designer, I don't accept a space for what it is, but what it could be.
My weakness is probably my inexperience. I've only been doing this a few years and experience can be so important to this field" (Holder, Interview). During the interview Mrs.. Holder revealed the difference between interior design and staging.
She said that interior design is about decorating the place to make it look nice. It takes the client taste in consideration, but also the designer can tone down the client taste to have better ideas and give specific process.
