Nursing is an ever growing and diverse field that encompasses a variety of fields. In order to stay abreast of new technology, practices and protocols research is a necessary and integral part of nursing. Research requires nurses to gather data, analyze data and formulate a conclusion. Beginning with a null hypothesis Is where most research studies originate. It is Important that researchers are aware of the various ways to conduct studies to either accept or reject a null hypothesis.
One of which Includes Quantitative studies where numerical value Is provided to complete a duty.This study provides useful In many cases such as amount of falls Inpatient have during a study. On the other hand, Qualitative study Is another option. This study provides an in-depth look at human behavior and the "why" factor. These are Ideas that can be visualized but not quantified.
One of the common ways to conduct research Is by use of Outcome research. Outcome research Is looks at the end product; the patient's satisfaction, experience and personal beliefs are taken Into account to help determine areas of improvement.These three ways to conduct a duty, quantitative, qualitative and outcome research will be discussed in detail regarding usefulness in nursing and nursing care and on-going research. Qualitative research is a systematic, subjective approach used to describe life experiences and give them meaning using words, instead of numbers (Burns; Groves, 2011, p. 76). There are four approaches to qualitative research the phenomenological research, grounded theory research, ethnographic research, and historical research.
In phenomenological research, persons are viewed to be integrated with the environment. The research deals with life experiences of a particular person or group. In grounded theory research, the research is based on the beliefs of a person related to religion, words, objects and clothing. In Ethnographic research, the research is about the person or group's way of living, and Historical research examines the events of the past. With these studies nurses can predict how a future generation will act based on the actions of others in the past.
Qualitative research is about the quality of life that the subject projects. Outcomes research is a type of research that centers on the effects of, health care interventions, or the result of patient care. "The outcomes studied are not the outcomes that occur for each patient, but rather the desired outcomes for all such patients: what should be occurring if excellent care is being provided" (Burns, & Groves, 2011, p. 507). Also outcomes research Is very multifaceted and very different from other types of research because the focus Is on health outcomes.
Outcomes research for nurses ND patients offers evidence about the benefits, risks, and consequences of Interventions so the nurse and the patient can make a more Informed decision. Researching the number of trial floatation patients who suffer a stroke after surgery would be an example of outcomes research.
