Courtney Dahlman Mrs. Tanner English 301 March 5 2012 “No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world. ” Dead poet society is a memorable drama film directed by Peter Weir in 1989.
Set at an American prep school in the late fifty’s, it questions several relevant issues, like the particularly strict and old-fashioned reasoning. How can a parent be so strict over their child's life? Neil as his dictatorial father has firm views that Neil will be a doctor and forbids him from taking part in any extra-curricular drama activities, as his studies are suffering. This dictat quashes Neil's dreams of becoming an actor but in a show of defiance he takes part in a play anyway at Welton, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and goes to the theatre to meet his son. Wordlessly, he takes Neil home and behind closed doors the pair have a massive row, the result of which is Neil being taken out of school and sent to military academy.
quit and say that he cant be in the play but when he tells Mr.Keating that he is not allowed to be in the play he says please talk to your dad we need you, and he says he talks to his dad but he does not and the night of the play he is on stage his dad walks in and is furious with him and when he is dad makes him go home he says you are not going back there but his mom said he did good and even Neil said that he did really good himself but his dad said no. “ I close my eyes and this image floats beside me The sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brains His hand reach out and choke me And all the time he’s mumbling Truth, like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold. You push it, stretch it, it will never be enough Kick it beat it, it will never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying, to the moment we leave dying.
It will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream. ” In this poem, Todd is saying that the madman is passion, but passion (the blanket) is not enough, it leaves you cold and exposed. Through your whole life, passion only is shown on your face when you wail and scream and cry.You need it to a certain extent because as Keating said, “the human race is filled with passion” and also that passion is the reason to stay alive, but just following your passions is not enough. You need to be able to control your passions and not let them control you. Neil's father finds out that his son is acting in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and goes to the theatre to meet his son.
