From a very young age morals and values are instilled in us. I believe how we apply these morals and values later in life plays a role in who we become as adults in the world. Our childhood helps define who we become, and the paths we choose as we navigate our way through our lives. At a very young age we are taught the difference between good and evil, right and wrong. No matter your morals, or whether you are good or evil I believe everyone serves a purpose in this world.
It is what we elect to do with our purpose that makes our lives more or less significant.I grew up in an environment that we looked at the heart and soul of a person no matter what their race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or religion may be. I was taught to be open and willing to seek understanding about the differences in people and respect them as a whole. I was taught compassion and empathy are important qualities to have in life and to care for a person as a whole. Naturally from a very young age because of the way I grew up I wanted to help people, and I took on a role off "care taker" and "nurturer. When I was about nine r ten years old I was at a restaurant in downtown Denver with my family and we were sitting by the window, I looked out the window and saw a homeless man barely able to stand.
He was digging through the trash looking for anything to eat. I looked at my father and asked him why he did not Just come into the restaurant to get dinner? To which my father replied "Well Hung, he does not have money for food or a place to stay, he lives on the streets. I had never seen a homeless man before; I did not understand why nobody else seemed to even notice the poor man on the side of he road eating from a trash can. I grabbed the rest of my food and stood up.
My dad asked what I was doing. I responded "giving that man the rest of my dinner, I have food at home. " My dad looked at me and smiled and told me that he loved me and I had a heart of gold. I went outside gave the man my dinner and he Just simply said "God Bless you dear. " It was that moment that I knew I would when I got older I wanted to be in a field where I could help people.
Growing up over the years what I wanted to do to help those in need has changed drastically. I have thought of careers in psychology, police officer, Joining the army to working with children with disabilities. For a period of time I worked for the District Attorneys office as a victims advocate for domestic violence victims. No matter what the career path I saw for my future it has always and will always involve helping others.
Even now although I am retail management I have found a way to give back to our community through different fundraising and charity events.Thanks to the company I work for, I have been able to partake in many great community service events. Walgreen is a wonderful company that truly does care about people, by helping them "get, stay and live well. " Whether I am in the back room counting money that has been donated to the cause, handing out bottles of water to the people running at the k events, or participating in events for children with disabilities I am the one who is receiving a gift.
I have been so lucky to be a part of the lives of so many amazing individuals.I nouns I am tenet to Nell toners I nave Eden ten one to grow Ana learn I . Nave Eden lessee to experience the wonderful lives of these individuals. They have taught me more about living life and what life is really about. These remarkable people I have met throughout my life are the ones that have helped me realize my importance and my potential. I have been so significantly impacted by the people I have met through different charity events that they helped me realize my true calling in life.
I owe it to all of them that I now know that nursing is where I belong.For me, nursing is a profession to go into to really LIVE life. As a nurse I know that I will see the moments in between the moments. It will be a privilege to see the shared glances at loved ones when they think nobody is looking. To see family and friends gaining perspective while pleading with us to do "whatever you can" to save their loved ones life, while swearing to themselves that they will never take for granted what they have. To be able to watch people get second chance at life and live it to the fullest.
I want to be there to make the moments of sadness and realization easier for those in pain. The miles and tears of Joy when they realize that everything is going to be okay and they will see the one they love again. I want to be able to make a difference in people's lives and put to use the virtues I was taught at such a young age. Nursing will allow me to continue to meet so many astounding people who can expand my horizons. Not only will I be able to make a significant difference in the lives of many but the patients and loved ones will be making transformations in my life as well.
Allowing myself to be open to others lives and part of their life story will benefit me in evolving in to a well-rounded and compassionate person and to see people for who they truly are. Just as Antoine De Saint Expert said "It is only with the heart that one sees rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes. " Curb personal (caring for the whole person) is what I strive to do daily when interacting with others. I can only hope that by living my life in such a way will make a significant impact on someone and that they too will take what they have learned from me and pass it on as I have from those before me.
