SLAVERY
Black slaves came from Africa and were transported overseas using large
ships. They arrived in America and were sold as slaves to people. Men
usually worked in cotton plantations, and women were sold as someone's
property.
EMANCIPATION
In 1866, the Northern and Southern states of America took part in the Civil
War.
The Northern States thought that slavery was wrong, while the Southern
states thought slavery was right. The American President, Abraham Lincoln
emancipated the slaves in 1862.
JIM CROW
Black people weren't free after the Civil war because people didn't regard
them of being any value. The black people who escaped to the North got an
education and a good job. The Southern states continued to discriminate
black people by: colour, by blacks not being allowed to play with whites,
and by blacks not being able to go to white churches. The name given to
this law was Jim Crow.
KU KLUX KLAN
The K.K.K. stands for the Ku Klux Klan.
They can be recognised by wearing
white robes with pointed hoods. They believe that whites are a superior
race, and that their friends in high places will protect them. They show
their beliefs by wearing white robes, and their symbol is a blazing cross.
