Muscat Making decisions can affect a person's life for better or for worse. Most people will decide whether to eat something or not, but most teenagers today will decide whether to complete their homework or not. Daily decisions consist of what a person will eat, who that person will talk to, where they decide to go, and the list could go on. Mark Twain, a famous writer, expresses decision making with the story Huckleberry Finn.In the story Huckleberry Finn, Hack Finn, a thirteen year old boy, makes sections for himself, like refusing to have his money, traveling with his new friend Jim, and whether to stay with his new "friends" the King and Duke.
Huckleberry Finn, also known as Hack, had to make many decisions during his young life. One decision Hack had to make was whether to give his father, Pap, the money he had received or to Just give it away. Hack made a big decision by "selling" his money to the Judge, Judge Thatcher, so his father couldn't get the money (Twain 17).After meeting up with his dad, Husks dad takes him to his house and makes Hack live with him. One eight Hack decided to fake his death by taking a pig and he "hacked into his throat" and "laid him down on the ground to bleed" (33). After faking his death Hack ran away to Jackson's Island, where he meets up with a familiar face.
After a few days living on Jackson 's Island, Hack finds Miss Watson 's slave, Jim. Jim said that he had "run off' and that is the reason why he was on the island (43). Hack had to make another big decision of whether to stay with his new friend Jim or to run away from him.Hack knew that Jim was a runaway slave and that if he gets caught with Jim he could get in a lot of trouble.
Hack made a decision to Just stay with Jim and travel down South with each other knowing they are both in danger. As Hack and Jim travel along the river, Hack and Jim become lost in the fog. Jim gets very worried that Hack might have drowned and questions him saying "En you main' dead" (84). After Jims horrible experience, Hack and Jim become closer and better friends and make decisions together along the river.
Jim and Hack become good friends and treat each other like family. After a few days traveling on the river, Hack and Jim find two men wanting to get on the boat with them and travel with them. As Hack and Jim get to know the two men, the younger says "l am a duke," and at first Jim and Hack believe it but are skeptic (123). After a few days of waiting on the two men, Hack realized that the men "warrant no kings nor dukes, Just low-down humbugs and frauds" (126). Hack made a decision to keep serving the two men as if they were royalty.
Hack once again knew that he could get in trouble, but becomes nice and learns to help others o matter what.In the story Huckleberry Finn, many decisions and sacrifices have to be made. Huckleberry Finn had to make decisions about running away, his friends, and where to go with his life. Throughout the story Hack becomes a smarter and wiser person in decision-making. Decisions can be tough in life and can sometimes change a lot of characteristics in someone's life.
