The book “Of Mice and Men” is about two men called George and Lennie. They work on a ranch and have a very close relationship but without each other they are lonely.
There are other characters in the book who are also lonely this is because of their race, age and sex. I think George is lonely because even though he has Lennie he can’t talk to him or have much fun with him because Lennie is always getting himself into trouble, which also means they have to travel around a lot so George doesn’t have time to make new friends because he is always on the move.In a conversation with Slim, George says “I seen the guys that go around the ranches alone. That aint no good” this is saying that he benefits by avoiding their, loneliness. He says that he and Lennie “got kinda used to each other “and it’s nicer to go around with a guy you know” this is saying he is quite lonely but because he has Lennie he feels more secure and not so lonely. When George kills Lennie he tries to make sure that he dies happy as Lennie’s last words were “le ` s get that place now” as George pulls the trigger behind his head.
He wanted him to die happy because George didn’t want to really kill him but it was for his own good but now George is all alone again. Another main character who is lonely is Lennie. I think Lennie is lonely because he only really has George and because Lennie has a child like mind which means he can’t talk to George properly. A sign which says that Lennie is lonely is that he wants to keep dead animals as he says “I don’t know why I can’t keep it.
It ain’t anybody’s mouse. I didn’t steal it. I found it lyin right beside the road. This is saying that Lennie wants to keep it as he will see the mouse as one of his friends. When Crooks threatened Lennie saying that George might abandon him Lennie was sure that George wouldn’t do anything like that because he is sure that his friendship with George is forever. Lennie is quite protective of George as he says “Aint nobody goin to talk no hurt to George” this is saying that if Lennie didn’t have George to guide him and to help him out when he gets into trouble Lennie would be more lonely and may not have lasted as long as he did.
Crooks is the only black man on the ranch and he is constantly being called a “nigger Crooks has an encounter with Curley’s wife. Curley’s wife was very aggressive to crooks being very racist to him and quite mean to him she called him a “nigger” and told him he wasn’t really wanted on the ranch and that he was no use or good, this made him feel very lonely and he lost confidence a bit because of the way she spoke to him and treated him.The way he is treated shows that he is not respected and that he is being judged just because of his colour which means he has no friends and is therefore lonely just because he is a different race. Candy is lonely because he has no family and he is older than the rest of the men on the ranch. The only friend he really had was his dog who he had since he was a puppy but the other men on the ranch shot the dog because it smelt and the dog was old, Candy said “Awright take im! He did not look down at the dog at all.He lay back on his bunk and crossed his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling” this shows Candy likes to keep his emotions and feelings inside because he may feel if he lets them out it makes him feel more lonely .
Candy also had a dream, the dream was that he would own the ranch with George and Lennie but this dream was shattered because of George killing Lennie, which meant that Candy now had no one at all and no goals to achieve so that made him feel very lonely and that’s why Candy is lonely.
