Full Metal Jacket & Platoon Essay Within the movies we have witnessed, the themes of betrayal are all evident. Referring to the boot camp segment of Full Metal Jacket, there are multiple instances of a theme of betrayal. Private Pyle is the key source of all these instances. He screwed up a lot and the unit in its entirety had to suffer the consequences of his failures.

For example, one time he didn't lock his locker for routine check-up and Sergeant Hartman found a Jelly doughnut in there and as a result made the unit do push-ups while he reluctantly ate the doughnut. After this occurrence, one random night they, as a unit, muffled Pyle and beat him with socks filled with bars of soap to get the message that he needs to stop failing across. Towards the end of the boot camp training, Private Pyle was already made into killer, and took a form of revenge as he killed Sergeant Hartman after enduring all of his abuse. Ultimately, however, he betrayed himself shortly after as he shot himself with the guns' barrel in his mouth. As for Platoon, the main source of betrayal was from the soldiers themselves. There were many discrepancies in the aspect of authority and equality amongst them and this resulted in a faulty unit.

For example, Sergeant Barnes overstepped his boundaries of authority and attempted to take full control. He was confronted about it, but instead of figuring things out he simply took out anyone who was completely against him. His first victim was Sergeant Alias, who constantly went against his inhumane attempts of handling things. As a result, there was a sense of distrust towards him, mainly from Chris Taylor.

Taylor lashed out against him and accused him of murder, but with no evidence he couldn't prove him guilty. And since Chris became a user of pot, he was seen as an unreliable source of information. In the next firefight, Barnes attempts to kill Chris in the midst of the confusion of an ambush but was hindered by a nearby explosion. After they regained consciousness, Chris ultimately killed Barnes, thus ending the cycle of betrayal. The movies Platoon and Full Metal Jacket provided accurate feelings of the things each soldier had to carry tit them in addition to their gear.Read also
