The status of women in the United States historically had one similarity in the later part of the twentieth century ranging to the early part of the twenty-first century; that connection was based on societies concept of women culture that shows the differences between man and woman. These beliefs were not just differences in gender, but in equality.
You see women’s equality hinged on societies beliefs that women should only be a wife and mother, nothing more. Traditionally these concepts were formed by society, whose beliefs was that women status was based on their standing in the family and the community. In the past there were women advocacy groups, women movements, and women private organizations that helped women to obtain equality. In 1878 Elizabeth Cady Stanton “drafted a federal suffrage amendment that was introduced in every Congress. ” From 1878 to 1920, because women did not have the same rights as men in society, Elizabeth kept submitting amendment she had drafted to Congress until women was granted the right to vote. From the end of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century women’s ambition were helped along by United Nation and legislations that had been created and signed by past presidents.
There have been a lot of social and legal changes stated in an article by McGraw Hill (Par 3) “over the past 160 years,” because women have been allowed to take part in the educational and the government divisions. These are changes were made in the legal system, because of the men and women “who have advocated for women’s rights. ” McGraw Hill (Par 3). In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton “organized the first U.
S. women rights convention in Seneca Falls New York, to discuss women’s civil rights. ” McGraw Hill (Par 3).The younger generations of today are enjoying the benefits of the women’s rights movement. In the last three presidencies, women and minorities have been elected to work along with the presidents, congress and even as senators.
In 1966, President Bill Clinton nominated the first woman as secretary of state, who was Madeleine K. Albright, and President George Bush nominated Linda Chavez s secretary of state and later Condoleeza Rice who replaced her. Now in present day, President Obama, appointed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state and Susan B. Rice as Ambassador to United Nations. The media provide descriptions and examples that we as humans identify with and imitate. The descriptions are important for learning to socialize and educate individuals while imitating social a sexual role models.
The question of masculinity or femininity apply have raise many questions by society as a whole, and issues raised by the media as well. These concepts asked by society are based on physical constructions. The biological differences between men and women get interpreted into social expressions and social descriptions of whether an individual is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual (GLBT).Society distinguished the difference between boy, girl and gender construction, while sex is used to determine the biological differences. The sexes, they are clarified by the psychology field and socially they are viewed as constructed differences. Based on these types of classifications it causes a distinct division of types.
Over the course of the past four decades the GLBT organizations, have pursued a variety of strategies to them more visible to society as ordinary people. This involved the elimination of gender-based discrimination, which still persists despite legislation created to remove it by the ALCU.In the early 1970’s homosexuals were believed to have a mental illness based on some psychiatrists. As a result of society’s beliefs, the U. S.
government allowed law enforcement to harass the gay community. For example, the police raided public meetings and violated their privacy in their homes. They were labeled as sexual perverts, and maligned in their communities and in the media, by religious groups, the law and social and cultural organizations all because they were all fearful of them. Then in the 1980’s the AIDS virus decimated the gay male community, which gave rise to the beliefs of those who hated, believed the GLBT received justice.
In today’s society there are signs of greater inclusion and acceptance of the GLBT community; due to education and legislation that has been signed, giving the GLBT equal rights. In recent months this has been the right to get married. Also, there had been a demand for compassion and for medical funding to find a cure for the dreaded disease of AIDS, cancer etc. In the long run, many heard these cries. Different social communities, such as the music society, have given the assistant.
Although there have been a lot of progress but there still exist in society the exclusion of GLBT because of homophobic fear. This can be seen from occasionally reading or hearing from television reporters of another gay victim. But the media has helped the cause over years and a lot can be contributed to new television programs, such as the New Normal, about two soon to be dads. In the past few years the important social and political issues revelant to women and GLBT are not only, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”…Burks (2011, Par.
1), but Planned Parenthood, health care and childcare. The president of the National Organization for Women, Terry O’Niell said “women’s rights have become the No. 1 social issue’ because of the Tea Party’s success in the 2010 elections. ” Washington Blade, (2012, Par. 3). Although it is known that a lot of women are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT), they as citizens depend on Planned Parenthood for health care during preganancy and child care when returning to work.
In Feburary 2011 President Obama “instituted a regulation requiring employer even religious organization to provide birth control as part of the insurance coverage to female employees. ” Washington Blade (2012, Par. 7).
