The importance of notifying your leadership is very important. Certain reasons why it is important is because your leadership always needs to know what you’re doing on a weekend so, they keep accountability of what your doing so keep accountability of all solders.2. Accountability and time management are important to succeeding in today’s Army. Responsibility is increased when soldiers have a single, clear set of rules that apply to a specific event.
When the guidelines are unclear, or when more than one set of rules seems to apply to an event, responsibility is decreased. The definition of accountability comes from the state of being accountable; liability to be called on to render an account; the obligation to bear the consequences for failure to perform as expected; accountableness. The importance of being on time accounted for is because it lets you say that you do not come back to formation after you go out on a convoy then they know that you are missing. If you do not show up and you do not respond on the radio there is going to possibly be a search team for you.
If they do send a search team for you then that puts that entire team at risk while looking for you. Point of accountability formation is to make sure all of your soldiers are there and that they are all accounted for. If one person is not accounted for then the entire formation does not leave. It is not just the fact that everyone is accounted for it is part of your military duty to be at formation and at movement. If you do not make it to formation or movement it is punishable by UCMJ.It could be the end of your career.
Not only will it ruin everything that you have gone through and wasted your time but you are also letting your buddies down and if you cannot show up to formation what makes you think that they can trust you in being there in the time of need. If you cannot be there then what is your team going to think when they hear over the radio that you are on the way and you are the only one that can help them. Accountability does not end in the army life it also goes into civilian world. When you have a job in the civilian world they are looking for someone that can be on time and do the job but the second that you are not on time your accountability starts to go down the drain.
3. Accountability is defined as "A is accountable to B when A is obliged to inform B about A’s (past or future) actions and decisions, to justify them, and to suffer punishment in the case of eventual misconduct". In leadership roles, accountability is the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions, and policies including the administration, governance and implementation within the scope of the role or employment position and encompassing the obligation to report, explain and be answerable for resulting consequences. Accountability refers to the obligation of an individual to report formally to his superior for the proper discharge of his responsibility. The person who accepts responsibility is accountable for the performance of the assigned duties.
To be accountable is to be answerable for one's conduct in respect to obligation fulfilled or unfulfilled. For some people it is extremely hard to take accountability for their actions. They refuse to take responsibility for what they have done. Accountability is the obligation of an individual to keep his superior informed of his use of authority and accomplishment of assigned tasks. Accountability grows out of responsibility and goes hand in hand with it. A person who is responsible for results must recognize that he will be judged by the quality of his performance.
Just as responsibility is a derivative of authority, accountability is a derivative of responsibility. Responsibility is the obligation to perform assigned tasks, accountability is the reporting of performance. All personal should have accountability of all their items. Not just being accountable for items is important but also your actions.
Such as leaving your CAC card at the office and also I think accountability means being on time to formations or work calls.4. Dictionary.com gives the following definition of reporting: an account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc.
In the United States Army Reporting is one of the most important actions a soldier can display. Reporting is used to keep track of a soldier’s location and or activities. Without some form of reporting, it would be impossible to monitor the actions or location of any given soldier. In a garrison environment, there are many reasons and situations, in which someone in a soldier’s team would need to know where or what a soldier is doing. For instance, with our unit we dispatch trucks every Thursday for the following week. The order to dispatch a truck is given from the platoon sergeant and passed down through the ranks to the individual who is to dispatch the truck.
If the soldier who is supposed to dispatch the truck fails to report to his command on the progress of the order given, then the command has no idea as to whether or not the truck was dispatched, if there is an issue dispatching the truck or if something is wrong with the dispatch. Reporting is also used in when inventorying equipment such as; weapons, nods, sights and optics, magazines, ammunition and other sensitive items of high value. For an example, during an arms room inventory, a lieutenant comes in with a check list of all items that should be in the arms room. He goes through the rifles, pistols and machine guns carefully reading each and every serial number making sure not to miss even one number. If a weapon has an attachment such as an optic, the optics serial number is also read.
He or she then proceeds to mark the serial numbers called off keeping a record of every item. In the event the item is not on his or her list, he or she will write it into keep track of that item.5. Accountability defined by DOD is the obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds.
The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is a very important part of an enlisted and a NCO's job.The enlisted soldier is responsible for all items issued to issue to him whether it be a weapon, NVG's, clothes, a vehicle, or some TA-50, a field manual, medication (morphine, demurral, or any narcotics), BII, etc. The NCO's responsibility is to make sure that the soldier is accountable for the items and has eyes on these items when need, so that he can report it to his higher command. Accountability also includes the most important piece of equipment the soldier him or herself.
Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that's why the team member should make sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to know where its equipment is.No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army. It goes to the highest officer to the lowest enlisted personal in the chain of command and back up again. Like in combat when there is a "code Red" the soldier knows that at a given and safe time he or she should get to the rally point, predestined by his or her chain of command, that way he or she and his or her equipment can be accounted for.
Accountability is used in many different ways, for example knowing if something is missing you could easy look at the accountability report to see if it was there before.6. Responsibility is: the obligation for the proper, custody, care, and safekeeping of property or funds entrusted to the possession or supervision of an individual. Being responsible in the United States Army has got to be of the utmost importance in my opinion.
Soldiers must be and act responsibly in every situation they may find themselves in, whether it’s in or out of uniform. Responsibility increases when soldiers believe that they have personal control over their mission performance, performing out of desire to do well instead of just following orders. The Department of Defense realizes that one needs to be responsible before one can be held accountable for anything. This realization leads me to believe that responsibility is not only something that is expected of soldiers, but instead demanded at the lowest level to ensure unit cohesion (Whether it be team, squad, platoon, company, battalion, brigade or division level), unity, and order amongst troops at all echelons of our Spartan society. There has been many studies that have suggested that when a soldier feels that they have personal control over work performance the result is that the soldier has a better task performance, better problem solving, and a higher persistence in accomplishing the task, more positive emotions and even better psychological and physical health.
Responsibility and accountability are two of the main factors in being a successful soldier in today’s Army.Responsibility is a huge factor when or if you are deployed to either Iraq, Afghanistan, or wherever the Army sends you. You must be a responsible soldier if you want to make it through deployment alive. Or even worse, if you fail to be responsible you could risk other soldier's lives. There are many good examples of responsibility in a normal workday.
Soldiers need to be responsible for their actions. It is very important to be responsible when working in the military police corps of the United States army. Seeing as responsibility and accountability go hand in hand, it only makes senses to first write on the importance of it and its impact on military life.7. Responsibility is a very important to have in the military.
You have to be accountable for all your belongings and gear that is issued to you so you can return it when you have to. Responsibility is also important because its puts one person in charge of something so everybody is not all trying to take charge in any particular situation. In this case being responsible for a weapon means you have to know where that weapon is at all times. Maintain that weapon and report any deficiencies to higher.8. The moment a civilian raises their hand and swears the oath of the soldier they immediately become responsible for not only themselves but their fellow soldiers, their unit and many other things civilians are not accustomed to.
When a recruit leaves for Basic Training they are responsible for arriving on time, having their paperwork, and being prepared for what waits ahead. Once a recruit goes through the in processing phase at their Basic Training Post they are issued their personal TA-50 or Table of Allowances 50.This includes the recruit's uniforms, load bearing equipment (such as the Load Bearing Vest, the Molle or Alice rucksack, their eye protection, ear plugs, Nuclear Biological and Chemical suit and a lot other items.) After arriving at their Basic Training unit the recruit is then issued, and accountable for, their personal weapon and chemical mask. The Drill Sergeants of the unit make the recruits sign a hand receipt to show that the individual is now accountable and responsible for their equipment. All these reasons and this example are why accountability and knowing where and what your soldiers are doing on the weekend are very important.
9. The US Army values soldiers that are accountable for their actions. Being accountable means being dependable; arriving to work and appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing at the right time. Accountability is the obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping and accurate record of personnel, property, documents or funds.10. It is important to keep your chain of command informed at all times, especially if you are in charge of the wellbeing of soldiers.
Communication is the foundation for sharing information between people to ensure that everything is understood and the correct action can be taken in a timely manner. Good communication is essential to complete the mission at hand. If communication breaks down then everything else with the chain of command will eventually start to break down as well. Without good communication to your chain of command it makes it impossible for your leaders to communicate to their superiors about problems or issues that you or others may be having. The Army has only one chain of command.
Through this chain of command, leaders issue orders and instructions and convey policies. A healthy chain of communication will help all Soldiers involved to have less stress and be able to communicate the demands of their unit to the family and other affected by those demands.11. In a war time situation not informing your chain of command can result in a death or injury.
If you fail to report something that might be out of the normal for instance you see a large crowd of locals gathering and you have been down this rout several times and this has never happened before this might indicate that there might be an anti-American protest. If this isn’t reported this type of protest might get out of hand and result in many American and local deaths.12. Oak tree counseling is very important, just like I said above for accountability and to get to know your soldiers.
This is the best way to relate to soldiers with personal discussions and get to know soldiers in a relaxed environment. These oak tree counseling’s should be conducted about every week with your soldiers to see what has been going on back home or if anything has changed or if any issues have come up. This is also the best way for first line supervisors to impact behavior and off-duty discipline of subordinates. This counseling is for first line supervisors to have a verbal contact with their soldiers about off duty risk management for long weekends, passes, or other identified periods of high risk.
Every leader must know their soldiers so, they can identify their high risk factors such as motorcycles or irresponsible alcohol use to ensure they exercise good discipline, army values, and good personal decisions during off-duty activities.
